What you actually pay
Shark starts cheaper and stays cheaper. The AV2501AE with its bagless XL HEPA base typically sits in the $330 to $450 band, while the roborock Q8 Max+ runs $500 to $650 and the older Q7 Max+ often sells for nearly the same. The Shark PowerDetect is the outlier at $550 to $800, priced for its carpet detection rather than its feature list.
Where the premium goes. With roborock you are buying brush geometry, LiDAR mapping that survives furniture moves, and a mop. With the PowerDetect you are buying carpet detection and a chassis that does not strand itself on a rug edge. Neither premium buys more raw suction than the money would get you from eufy.
Running costs are the part buyers miss. roborock's self-empty docks take disposable bags, which is a small permanent bill — in a heavy-shedding home, a bag every few weeks. Shark's XL HEPA base is bagless, so it costs nothing to empty. Across three years that difference is worth real money and it partly closes the purchase-price gap.
Everything else is shared. Both need filters periodically, both need side brushes eventually, and both need a replacement battery somewhere around year three to four if you keep them that long. Budget for a filter multipack whichever brand you choose — running a clogged filter is the fastest way to make either robot look worse than it is.

Which one should you buy?
Buy the roborock Q8 Max+ if long hair is the actual problem — dual rubber rollers are the one design here that resists winding hair around the axle, and it mops as well. Buy the Shark AV2501AE if you want the cheapest self-emptying robot that never asks you to buy bags, because its XL HEPA base is bagless and Shark's owner ratings across a very large review base are steadier than roborock's. The two brands are solving different halves of the same problem, and which half matters is decided by your floors.

Why does the brush design decide this?
Because long hair does not defeat a robot by weight. It defeats it by wrapping. A bristle roller gives every strand something to catch on, and within a few runs in a shedding household the hair has spun itself into a dense rope around the axle and end caps. Once that happens suction is irrelevant: the brush stops turning, the bearing loads up, and the robot pushes debris around instead of collecting it.
roborock's response is to remove the bristles. The Q7 Max+ uses a single all-rubber brush and the Q8 Max+ uses the DuoRoller pair, and both are far harder for hair to grip. Owners of both models consistently report much less time spent with scissors than they spent on their previous robot. Shark's response is different: keep a brushroll but build in a self-cleaning comb that shears hair off it as it spins. That works, and it is the reason Shark robots do better in pet homes than most bristle-roller designs, but it is a mitigation rather than a prevention — owners still report periodic trimming.

Bags or bagless: which self-empty base costs less to live with?
Both brands sell you a base that empties the robot for you, and they solve the dust problem in opposite ways. roborock's docks take a sealed disposable bag: clean to remove, near-zero dust exposure, and a permanent running cost of roughly the price of a coffee every month or two in a heavy-shedding home. Shark's XL HEPA base on the AV2501AE is bagless — you pull a bin out and tip it into the trash, which costs nothing and is noticeably dustier.
For an allergy household the bagged design is the better answer and the running cost is worth paying. For everyone else, bagless quietly saves more over three years than the price difference between the two robots. This is the kind of cost nobody factors in at purchase and everybody notices later, which is why it belongs in the comparison rather than the footnotes.
Does roborock's mapping actually beat Shark's?
On complex floor plans, yes. roborock's LiDAR mapping has been iterated for years and its room segmentation, no-go zones and multi-floor maps hold up over months rather than needing to be redrawn. Shark's mapping on the AV2501AE and PowerDetect is competent — both build a home map and accept room-level commands — but owners more often report rooms merging or a map needing to be rebuilt after furniture moves.
Where Shark pulls ahead is physical navigation rather than digital. The PowerDetect's NeverStuck design is aimed at the failure mode that actually ends robot ownership: getting beached on a threshold or a rug edge and sitting there until someone comes home. If your house has thick rugs and raised transitions, that matters more than a tidy app map.
Which is better on carpet?
Shark, and specifically the PowerDetect. Its carpet detection lifts suction when it senses pile rather than running one setting across the whole house, which is exactly what deep-worked pet hair needs. roborock's answer is manual: 30 levels of suction you set per room in the app, which works if you configure it and does nothing if you leave it on the default.

Where each brand's line-up is strong and weak
roborock is strong in engineering the parts that fail: anti-tangle brush geometry, LiDAR that keeps working, app control with real depth, and a mop function that most rivals bolt on badly. roborock is weak on price stability and review depth — models supersede each other quickly, an eighteen-month-old flagship often still sells near its launch price, and the newest model always has the thinnest owner record.
Shark is strong on practicality and value: bagless bases, carpet detection, physical resilience, and a US service and parts network that is easy to deal with. Shark is weak on mopping — it is simply absent from these models — and on mapping precision in houses with many small rooms.
What both brands are bad at
Neither replaces a proper vacuum in a shedding household, and owners of both say so. A robot's value is that it runs every day and stops hair accumulating, not that any single pass is thorough.
