Batteries and chargers are the expensive, non-transferable part of a cordless platform, and once you have two of them on a shelf, every future tool purchase gets steered toward the same brand because a bare tool costs half what a kit does. Choose that platform deliberately and the next ten years of buying gets cheaper. The Buying Order That Actually Works
Tool buying goes wrong when it happens in bulk. The combo kit with five tools in a bag looks like value, and then the reciprocating saw sits unused for four years. A better sequence, drawn from what owners say they actually reach for:
- Cordless drill/driver. Pilot holes, anchors, furniture, blinds, cabinet hardware. Nothing else earns its place faster.

- Circular saw or miter saw. Buy when you start cutting lumber rather than assembling it. A circular saw is cheaper and more portable; a miter saw is faster and far more accurate for trim.

What the Specs Mean (and Which Ones Don’t)
Cordless tool marketing runs on numbers that sound decisive and rarely are. Three are worth understanding.
Voltage tells you which battery family a tool belongs to, not how strong it is. An 18V or 20V MAX platform — the two names describe the same nominal 18-volt pack, measured differently — is the standard for full-size tools. A 12V platform is lighter, shorter and genuinely nicer to use overhead or inside cabinets, and plenty strong for household work. Voltage is a compatibility spec first and a power spec a distant second.
Amp-hours (Ah) is fuel-tank size, not power. A 4.0Ah battery runs roughly twice as long as a 2.0Ah battery on the same tool, and weighs noticeably more. Two small batteries beat one big one for most homeowners because you can charge one while using the other. Large packs earn their weight on saws and grinders, not drills.
Torque, quoted in inch-pounds or unit watts out, is the number most worth reading skeptically. Anything above about 300 in-lbs will drive every fastener a house needs. Brushless, Explained Without the Sales Pitch
A brushed motor uses carbon contacts that physically rub against a spinning commutator. They wear, they generate heat, and they waste energy. A brushless motor replaces them with electronic switching, which means less heat, longer runtime from the same battery, a motor that adjusts its draw to the load, and a tool that lasts longer. All of that is real. What owner reviews show is that the practical gap is largest for people who use tools hard and often, and smallest for the drill that lives in a hall closet. Setting Up the Space
The tools are the cheap part of a workshop. The part that changes how much you get done is the space: a bench at the right height, light that does not throw your own shadow onto the work, and enough outlets that you are not unplugging the freezer to run a sander.
