A rolling tool cart is one of the most useful things you can build for a shop — it brings your tools to the work and rolls out of the way after. From a sheet or two of plywood it takes a weekend and costs 60 to 150 dollars including casters (2026), using a saw, a drill, and clamps. Nothing is permitted or structural. The details that matter are choosing casters rated above your loaded weight (at least two locking), and building a wide, low base with heavy tools down low so the cart doesn’t tip when you round a corner or work from a top shelf.

Step 1: Size the cart
Decide the footprint and height. A common cart is 24 by 30 inches and built to match your workbench or table-saw height so the top can serve as an outfeed or assembly surface. Keep it wider than it is tall for stability. Cut the sides, top, bottom, and shelves from 3/4-inch plywood.
Step 2: Build the box square
Assemble the top, bottom, and sides into a rigid box with glue and pocket screws, checking square by measuring equal diagonals. Add a 1/4-inch back panel to lock it square and stop it racking — a cart gets bumped and rolled, so the back panel earns its keep. Add fixed shelves at your planned heights.

Step 3: Mount the casters
Reinforce the bottom corners (a doubled plywood pad or a 2x4 rail) so the caster screws bite into solid material, then bolt or screw on casters rated comfortably above your total loaded weight. Make at least two of them locking. Solid caster mounting is critical — a caster that tears loose under load drops the cart and its contents.
Step 4: Load low, keep it stable
Put the heaviest tools and totes on the bottom shelf and lighter items up top so the center of gravity stays low and the cart won’t tip when you turn or pull items from an upper shelf. Lock the casters before loading or working from the cart. A wide base plus low heavy load equals a stable roller.

Step 5: Customize the top and ends
Make the top flat and durable — a laminate skin or a coat of finish protects it and lets it double as a work surface. Add pegboard or a French cleat to an end panel for hand tools, a power strip for chargers, and a spot for the shop vac. Because it’s your build, fit it to exactly the tools you use most.
