Anyone can hang a pegboard tool wall in an afternoon — the only rule that matters is that it needs a 1/2-inch gap behind it and it has to fasten into studs. A full 4-by-8-foot wall runs about 40 to 90 dollars in board, furring strips, and hooks (2026), and takes one to two hours with a drill and a level. No permit, nothing structural. The two mistakes that ruin it are mounting the board flat against the wall (the hooks can’t seat) and screwing into bare drywall (it sags and tears out). Frame it, gap it, hang it.
Tools and materials

Step 1: Find and mark the studs
Run a stud finder across the wall and mark every stud with painter’s tape or a pencil. Studs are typically 16 inches on center (sometimes 24). Your frame and mounting screws must land in these, because the loaded wall’s weight has to transfer into framing, not drywall. Mark a level line for the top of the board so the whole panel hangs straight.
Step 2: Build the spacer frame
Cut 1x2 or 1x3 furring strips and screw them to the studs with 2.5-inch screws — a strip along the top, one along the bottom, and vertical strips over each stud. These strips create the 1/2-to-3/4-inch air gap the hooks need and give you solid wood behind every mounting point. Check the frame with a level as you go; a frame that is out of plane makes the pegboard bow.

Step 3: Mount the pegboard
Set the panel on the frame, line it up to your level line, and screw through the board into the furring strips every 12 to 16 inches with 1-inch screws and a washer under each head. Do not overdrive — snug the screws until the head just seats. Sinking them hard dimples and cracks hardboard around the hole. Keep the screws in from the edges by an inch so the corners don’t break out.
Step 4: Lay out and hang the hooks
Before you hang anything, lay your tools on the floor and group them — frequently used tools at chest-to-eye height, heavy items low, little-used items up high. Insert hooks and hang the heaviest tools first so you can see the spacing work out. Use locking hooks (or secure loose ones with hot glue) for anything you grab often, so the hook doesn’t come out with the tool. Trace each tool’s outline with a marker if you want a shadow board that shows what’s missing.

Step 5: Load it and adjust
Hang the heavy hitters — a circular saw, a drill, a battery charger — on multi-prong or shelf hooks that spread the load across several holes rather than one. Step back, live with it for a week, and move hooks as your habits reveal themselves. The whole point of pegboard over a fixed rack is that it is endlessly rearrangeable; nothing is permanent.
