Why Start From Seed at All
The nursery has a rack of tomato starts in May, so why bother with trays in February? Three reasons, and they compound. Variety is the big one — a garden center carries perhaps six tomatoes; a seed catalog carries six hundred, including the paste varieties, cold-tolerant hybrids and heirlooms that never survive commercial shipping. Cost is the obvious one: a packet of eighty pepper seeds costs less than two nursery starts. And timing is the quiet one — when you grow your own, transplants go in the ground on the day your soil is ready rather than the day a truck delivered them, which for many crops is worth two weeks of harvest.
There is also the plain fact that seedlings you raised yourself tend to be healthier. Nursery starts are frequently root-bound, over-fertilized and grown under conditions nothing like your yard. A seedling that has spent its whole life under your light, in your water and hardened off on your porch adapts to a transplant far better.

Timing Is the Whole Game
Almost every seed-starting failure traces back to a calendar, not a technique. Sow too early and plants outgrow their trays weeks before the soil is warm enough to receive them; sow too late and a short-season crop runs out of summer. The fix is to find your average last frost date, then count backward by the weeks each crop needs indoors — six to eight for tomatoes and peppers, four to six for brassicas, three to four for cucumbers, melons and squash, and effectively zero for beans, carrots, radishes and peas, which resent transplanting and belong directly in the ground.
Frost dates are averages, not guarantees, and the last two weeks of spring are where gardens are lost. If the ten-day forecast says a late freeze is coming, hold the transplants back. Light, Warmth and Water — In That Order
Seeds need three things, and they need them at different moments. Warmth matters most before germination: most warm-season vegetables want a soil surface between 70°F and 80°F, which is why heat mats appear in nearly every serious seed-starting kit. Light matters most immediately after germination: the instant a seed leaf breaks the surface, that seedling starts hunting for photons, and a windowsill in March cannot supply them. Fourteen to sixteen hours under a full-spectrum light hung two to four inches above the canopy is the difference between stocky plants and the pale, stretched failures covered in why seedlings get leggy.
Water is where beginners overcorrect. Seed-starting mix should be damp like a wrung-out sponge and never soggy. Bottom watering — pouring into the tray beneath the cells and letting the mix wick moisture upward — keeps the surface drier, discourages fungus gnats and avoids damping off, the fungal collapse that flattens a whole tray overnight. Once seedlings are up, take the humidity dome off. It did its job during germination and now just traps the stagnant, wet air that damping off loves.
What Kit You Actually Need
The honest list is short: a cell tray with drainage, a solid bottom tray, a humidity dome, a bag of sterile seed-starting mix, a light, and — for warm-season crops — a heat mat. That is it. Everything else is convenience. Pellet kits trade a little control for a lot of simplicity and are an excellent first purchase; reusable rigid cell trays cost more up front and last a decade. One thing worth spending on: sterile seed-starting mix rather than garden soil or standard potting mix. It is fine-textured enough for tiny roots, drains fast, and — critically — is free of the pathogens that live in yard soil. Reusing last year's mix is the most common shortcut and the most common cause of a tray that mysteriously fails.

From Tray to Bed
Transplanting is the moment gardens are won or lost, and the step almost everyone skips is hardening off. Indoor seedlings have never met wind, direct sun or a cold night; move them straight outside and they scorch, wilt or simply stall for a fortnight. A week of gradual exposure — an hour of shade on day one, working up to a full day of sun and a night outdoors — costs nothing and is covered step by step in hardening off seedlings.
Where they go matters too. Most vegetables need six to eight hours of direct sun; leafy greens and herbs will tolerate four to five. Raised beds warm earlier in spring, drain better and are far easier on your back, which is why we cover them separately in best raised garden beds. Spacing is worth being ruthless about — crowded plants compete for light and airflow, and a bed of eight healthy tomatoes will always out-produce a bed of sixteen struggling ones.
Keeping the Harvest Coming
A garden planted once in May produces once in August. The habit that separates a good vegetable gardener from a great one is succession planting — sowing small batches of fast crops every two or three weeks so lettuce, radishes, beans and cilantro arrive continuously instead of all at once. Pair that with a second cool-season round in late summer and most yards can produce from April through the first hard freeze.
Watering underpins all of it. Aim for about an inch a week in one or two deep soakings, adjust upward in heat and for containers, and read the soil rather than the calendar — the full method is in how often to water a vegetable bed.

Soil and Feeding, Without the Mystique
Vegetables are hungry annuals, and in a bed they are being asked to produce a great deal of growth in a short window. That does not mean an elaborate fertilizer regime — it means organic matter and a bit of attention. Two to three inches of finished compost worked into the top layer each spring does most of the work: it feeds the soil biology, improves drainage in clay and water retention in sand, and buffers the nutrient swings that make plants stall.
Beyond that, feed according to what the crop is doing. Leafy crops want nitrogen and respond visibly to a diluted liquid feed every couple of weeks. Fruiting crops — tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers — want a more balanced feed early and then a shift toward potassium once they start flowering; too much nitrogen at that stage produces magnificent foliage and very little fruit. Root crops want very little added nitrogen at all, since it drives leaf growth at the expense of the root you are actually growing.
Mulch is the piece most beginners skip and most experienced gardeners consider non-negotiable. Two inches of straw, shredded leaves or arborist chips on the soil surface cuts evaporation dramatically, suppresses the weed seeds that would otherwise germinate, moderates soil temperature through heat waves, and breaks down into next year's organic matter. In a hot summer it is worth more than any fertilizer you can buy.
One genuinely useful investment is a simple soil test. Guessing at pH and nutrient levels is how gardeners end up adding things the soil already has plenty of. Most crops want a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and if yours sits well outside that range, no amount of feeding will fix the underlying problem.
