Cutting straight with a circular saw is a skill anyone can learn in ten minutes — the secret is to stop following a pencil line by eye and start guiding the saw’s shoe against a straightedge. A clamped level, a factory-edge strip, or a shop-made track turns a wandering cut into a dead-straight one. There is no cost beyond a clamp and a straight reference, and nothing dangerous about the technique itself as long as you support the workpiece and set blade depth correctly. Below are five reliable methods, from a quick speed-square crosscut to a full-sheet track.
Tools and materials

- Clamps, a tape measure, and a pencil, plus foam board or scrap 2x4s to support sheet goods.

Step 1: Set blade depth and support the work
Set the blade to project about 1/4 inch below the material — deeper than that is more dangerous and splinters more. Support the whole workpiece so it can’t sag and pinch the blade mid-cut (a pinch causes kickback). Two sacrificial 2x4s under a board, or a full sheet of rigid foam under plywood, both work. Cut with the good face down, since a standard blade tears out on the exit side.
Step 2: Speed square for short crosscuts
For cuts up to about 7 inches wide, hold a speed square firmly against the board’s edge and run the saw shoe along the square’s raised lip. The square can’t slip because its fence hooks the board edge. This gives a perfectly square crosscut with no measuring of an offset — the fastest guided cut there is.

Step 3: Clamped straightedge for long cuts
For long rips, clamp a straightedge and run the shoe against it. The key number is the offset: measure from the edge of your saw’s shoe to the blade (usually about 1.5 inches). Mark your cut line, then clamp the straightedge that offset distance to the side of the line so the blade lands exactly on your mark. Confirm with a test cut on scrap — shoe-to-blade distance varies by model.
Step 4: Make a shop-made track (the best method)
Screw or glue a straight strip of plywood (a factory edge) onto a wider thin base. Run the saw down the strip once to trim the base to the exact blade line. Now the base edge is your cut line — line that edge up to your marks, clamp, and cut, no offset math ever again. This is the single upgrade that makes circular-saw cuts as clean as a track saw for the price of a clamp and an offcut.

Step 5: Cut on the waste side and let it feed
Always cut on the waste side of the line so the 1/8-inch kerf comes out of the scrap, not your keeper. Start the blade at full speed before it touches the wood, keep the shoe flat and pressed to the guide, and push at a steady, unhurried pace — forcing the saw makes it deflect and burn. Let the motor do the work.
