Refinishing a tired tabletop is one of the most satisfying weekend DIY projects, and it needs no permit or special skill. Expect to spend a weekend (much of it drying time) and 30 to 80 dollars on sandpaper, stain, and finish. The tools are a random-orbit sander, a vacuum, and brushes or rags. The whole outcome rides on two disciplines: sanding through the grits in order without skipping (skipping leaves scratches that stain reveals), and applying thin, patient topcoats. Rush either and the flaws show; take your time and the top looks factory-new.

Step 1: Clean and assess

Clear the table, clean it, and look closely. Note whether the top is solid wood or veneer — veneer is thin, and aggressive power-sanding can cut right through it. For thick or carved finishes, plan to use chemical stripper; for a thin worn finish on a flat solid top, sanding alone is fine. Set up in a ventilated space and lay down a drop cloth.

Step 2: Remove the old finish

Start sanding at 80 grit to cut through the old finish and level the surface, keeping the sander flat and moving. Or apply chemical stripper, let it work, and scrape the softened finish off, then sand to clean up. On veneer, favor stripper and go very gently with any power sander. Get down to bare, even wood with no shiny finish patches remaining.

Step 3: Sand up through the grits

Move to 120 grit to erase the 80-grit scratches, then 150 or 180 for a stain-ready surface (220 if clear-coating only). Never skip more than one grit — the fine paper can’t remove coarse scratches, and stain makes every one visible. Let the sander’s weight do the work, move slowly, and vacuum thoroughly between grits so stray coarse grit doesn’t scratch the finer passes.

Step 4: Raise the grain and final-sand

Wipe the top with a damp cloth to swell the cut fibers, let it dry, and sand lightly at your final grit. This keeps the surface smooth after a water-based finish instead of turning rough with the first coat. Vacuum and wipe with a tack cloth so not a speck of dust remains.

Step 5: Stain and topcoat

If staining, apply evenly with the grain, wipe off the excess after the recommended dwell time, and let it dry fully. Then apply thin coats of your topcoat — two to three coats of polyurethane for a hardworking table — sanding lightly with 320 grit and vacuuming between coats. Thin, patient coats level out glassy; thick coats run and trap bubbles. Let it cure before putting the table back in service.

What grit do you use to sand a tabletop?

Work up through the grits in order: start at 80 grit to remove the old finish and level the surface, move to 120 to erase the 80-grit scratches, then finish at 150 or 180 for staining, or 220 if you want an ultra-smooth clear-coat surface. Never skip more than one grit step — jumping from 80 straight to 220 leaves deep scratches the fine paper can't remove, and they show up glaringly once stain goes on. Each grit's only job is to remove the scratches left by the previous one.

Should I sand or strip the old finish?

It depends on the finish and the piece. Sanding is fine for most flat tabletops with a thin, worn finish, and it's faster on open surfaces. Chemical stripper is better for thick finishes, detailed or carved areas a sander can't reach, and veneered tops where aggressive sanding could cut through the thin veneer layer. Many people strip first to remove the bulk of the finish, then sand to clean up and smooth. On veneer, be very cautious with a power sander — the veneer may be only a fraction of a millimeter thick.

Why do I have swirl marks after sanding?

Swirl marks come from a random-orbit sander leaving tiny circular scratches, usually because you skipped a grit, pushed too hard, moved too fast, or didn't clear the dust. Fix them by sanding through the full grit sequence without skipping, letting the sander's weight do the work (no leaning), moving slowly, and vacuuming between grits so loose grit doesn't scratch. A final hand-sanding with the grain at 180 or 220 removes any remaining swirls before finishing. Swirls are invisible on bare wood but jump out under stain and topcoat.

Do you have to raise the grain before finishing?

For a water-based stain or finish, yes — wipe the sanded wood with a damp cloth, let it dry, and sand lightly again at your final grit. The water swells cut fibers so they stand up; sanding them off now means the surface stays smooth after the finish goes on, instead of turning rough with the first water-based coat. For oil-based finishes it's less critical but still gives a smoother result. It's a five-minute step that noticeably improves the final feel.

What is the most durable finish for a tabletop?

For a table that sees daily use, a polyurethane topcoat (oil-based or water-based) is the durable standard — it resists water, heat, and scratches. Oil-based poly is tougher and adds warm amber tone but smells strong and dries slowly; water-based poly is clearer, low-odor, and dries fast. For the highest durability apply two to three coats, sanding lightly between them. Hardwax oils and tung oil give a beautiful natural look and are repairable, but they protect less against water rings than a film-forming poly.
