A drill/driver uses smooth, continuous rotary torque with an adjustable clutch and a chuck, making it the versatile tool for drilling holes and controlled screw driving; an impact driver adds rotational hammering bursts that deliver far more turning force, ideal for long screws, lag bolts and heavy driving. The drill is the generalist you reach for first; the impact driver is the high-torque driving specialist you add second. What's the difference?
The drill/driver applies steady rotation and has two defining features: a chuck (keyed or keyless) that clamps round-shank bits of many sizes, and an adjustable clutch that limits torque so it stops before overdriving a screw. That makes it precise. The impact driver spins like a drill until it hits resistance, then engages a hammer-and-anvil that adds rapid rotational blows, stacking extra torque in bursts. It has a 1/4-inch hex collet and no clutch. The result: the drill controls, the impact driver powers. A compact impact driver drives fasteners that would stall a similarly sized drill.

Which is better for your work?
Reach for the drill when you're boring holes of any size, driving into delicate material, or need the clutch to set a consistent screw depth — pilot holes, hinge screws, larger bits and precision work all favor it. Reach for the impact driver when you're running a lot of screws, sinking long deck or framing screws and lag bolts, or backing out a fastener the drill stalls on. Remember the bit rule: the impact driver takes only 1/4-inch hex-shank bits, and its impacts can shatter standard bits, so use impact-rated accessories.
Can you use one instead of the other?
To a point. A drill can drive most screws just fine with its clutch — you only miss the impact driver on long or large fasteners where the drill stalls and your wrist takes the reaction torque. An impact driver can drill small holes with hex-shank bits, but it can't grip round-shank or large bits and gives no clutch control, so it can't fully replace the drill. That mutual gap is exactly why the two are sold as a combo.

Which should you buy?
If budget allows only one, buy the drill/driver — it drills and drives with control and covers the broadest range of jobs. Add an impact driver when you're driving many or long fasteners and want the extra power and less fatigue. Because both share a battery platform on most brands, a two-tool combo kit is usually the best value.
