Unplug the saw or remove the battery, press and hold the arbor lock button, then turn the arbor bolt in the same direction the blade spins to loosen it — on most sidewinders that means clockwise, because the bolt has a left-hand thread. Retract the lower guard, lift the old blade out, seat the new one with its rotation arrow matching the arrow on the guard so the teeth point forward and up at the front of the shoe, refit the outer washer and tighten firmly by hand. The whole job is about five minutes.
First: disconnect the power
This is the step that separates a routine job from an emergency room visit. Unplug a corded saw at the wall, not just at the switch, and physically remove the battery pack from a cordless saw. Never rely on the trigger lock. Then wear cut-resistant gloves — a carbide-tipped blade will slice a bare hand at the lightest contact — and work on a stable bench at waist height. Let the blade cool if you have just been cutting; a blade coming out of a long rip is hot enough to burn.

What you need
- The blade wrench or hex key supplied with the saw, usually 5 mm or 6 mm, often clipped to the tool body
- Cut-resistant gloves
- A scrap of wood, if your saw has no arbor lock
- A rag and a blade cleaner or degreaser for pitch buildup
- Safety glasses

Step-by-step
- Disconnect power. Unplug at the wall, or remove the battery. Confirm by pulling the trigger once with the saw pointed safely away.
- Set the depth to full. Drop the shoe so the blade is fully exposed. It makes the bolt easier to reach and gives you room to lift the blade out.
- Engage the arbor lock. Press and hold the arbor lock button, usually near the base of the blade housing, and rotate the blade slightly by hand until the lock drops into place and the blade stops turning. If your saw has no arbor lock, wedge a scrap of soft wood against the blade teeth to hold it — never use a screwdriver or a metal bar, which chips carbide.
- Loosen the arbor bolt the right way. Fit the wrench and turn the bolt in the same direction the blade spins. On most sidewinder saws that is clockwise, because the thread is left-handed. Check the arrow on the guard if you are unsure, and if the bolt will not move with firm pressure, stop and reconsider the direction rather than adding leverage.
- Remove the bolt and outer washer. Keep them together and put them somewhere they cannot roll off the bench. Note which way round the outer washer sits — it usually has a raised boss that faces the blade.
- Retract the lower guard and lift the blade out. Pull the guard back with one hand and lift the blade off the arbor with the other. If the blade is jammed against the shoe, raise the depth setting further.
- Clean the arbor and washers. Wipe sawdust and pitch off the arbor shaft, the inner flange and both washer faces. Debris trapped between the flange and the blade is a common cause of a blade running out of true, which shows up as a wobbly, wandering cut.
- Fit the new blade the right way round. Match the rotation arrow printed on the blade to the arrow on the saw guard. At the front of the shoe the teeth point forward and upward. Seat the blade flat against the inner flange with no gap.
- Refit the washer and bolt. Outer washer boss toward the blade, then the bolt. Engage the arbor lock and tighten firmly by hand — snug plus about a quarter turn. Do not use an impact wrench or a cheater bar; over-torque distorts the washers and makes the next change miserable.
- Check the guard and test. Release the arbor lock, spin the blade by hand to confirm it turns freely and runs true, and check the lower guard snaps closed on its own. Reconnect power, set the depth so the blade projects about 1/4 inch below the workpiece, and make a test cut in scrap.

Match the arbor size as well as the diameter — 7¼ inch blades are normally 5/8 inch arbor, and blades with a diamond knockout can fit either. Never use a blade rated below the saw's no-load speed, which is printed on both the tool and the blade.

Mistakes to avoid
- Not disconnecting power. The one mistake with serious consequences. Battery out, plug out.
- Forcing the bolt the wrong way. Left-hand threads catch people out. Turn the bolt the way the blade spins to loosen.
- Blade fitted backward. The saw burns, smokes and kicks. Check the arrow on the blade against the arrow on the guard.
- Sawdust behind the flange. A tiny amount makes the blade run out of true and produces a wandering, chattering cut.
- Over-tightening with an impact wrench. Distorts washers, and you will not get it off next time.
- Wedging the blade with a screwdriver. Chips carbide teeth. Use soft wood scrap.
- Defeating the lower guard. The guard is the primary protection against a kickback injury. If it sticks, clean it rather than tying it back.
- Exposing too much blade. Set depth so the blade projects about a quarter inch below the material. Deeper exposes more blade and increases kickback risk.
When a blade is done
Replace the blade when carbide tips are chipped, missing or visibly rounded, when the plate is warped or has a cracked gullet, or when cuts burn and wander after cleaning. Clean it first, though — pitch and resin buildup on the plate mimics dullness almost exactly, and a soak in blade cleaner or a citrus degreaser plus a nylon brush restores a lot of blades people were about to bin. Quality carbide blades can also be professionally resharpened several times for a fraction of replacement cost, which is worth it on larger or specialty blades and rarely worth it on a basic 24-tooth framing blade.
