Crown molding intimidates people, but with a miter saw and the right method the corners are very doable — expect a learning curve, not a permit. A room’s worth of molding costs 50 to 200 dollars depending on profile and length, and the tools are a miter saw, a coping saw (optional), and a nail gun. The single biggest trip-up is orientation: crown is cut at an angle, and getting the up/down and left/right straight is 90 percent of the battle. The beginner-friendly approach is to nest the molding against the fence upside down and use one 45-degree miter setting; always test-fit on scrap first.
Tools and materials
- A miter saw (a compound miter saw helps for the flat method) and a coping saw if you plan to cope inside corners.
- A tape measure, pencil, and an angle finder to check that your corners are actually 90 degrees — most aren’t.

- Materials: crown molding, a scrap length for test cuts, finish nails, painter’s caulk, and wood filler for the seams.

Step 1: Measure and check your corners
Measure each wall run, and use an angle finder to check each corner — real corners are seldom a true 90 degrees, and knowing the actual angle lets you fine-tune the miter. Note which corners are inside (concave) and which are outside (convex); they take opposite miter directions and mirror-image cuts.
Step 2: Nest the molding on the saw
Place the molding upside down and leaning against the fence at its spring angle — exactly how it sits on the wall, just inverted, with the ceiling edge on the saw table and the wall edge against the fence. A stop block or shim keeps that angle identical for every cut. Consistent spring angle is what makes corners close; a molding that leans differently on each cut produces gaps.

Step 3: Set the miter and cut a test corner
Leave the bevel at zero and set the miter to 45 degrees (left or right for the corner and end you’re cutting). Cut two scrap pieces and dry-fit the corner before touching your real stock. Adjust the miter a degree or two if the joint gaps — this test-fit habit saves expensive molding.
Step 4: Cope inside corners for tight joints (optional)
For inside corners, pros often cope: leave the first piece square into the corner, then cut the second piece’s profile with a coping saw so it fits over the face of the first. Coped joints hide gaps far better than double miters as the house expands and contracts. Miter both pieces only if you’re confident in the wall angle.

Step 5: Install, caulk, and fill
Nail the molding to the wall and ceiling framing (or to a backer) with finish nails, keeping the spring angle consistent along the run. Caulk the top and bottom edges to the wall and ceiling, fill nail holes and any corner gaps with wood filler, sand lightly, and paint. Caulk and filler forgive the small gaps that even careful cuts leave.
