Crown molding intimidates people, but with a miter saw and the right method the corners are very doable — expect a learning curve, not a permit. Step 1: Measure and check your corners

Measure each wall run, and use an angle finder to check each corner — real corners are seldom a true 90 degrees, and knowing the actual angle lets you fine-tune the miter. Note which corners are inside (concave) and which are outside (convex); they take opposite miter directions and mirror-image cuts.

Step 2: Nest the molding on the saw

Place the molding upside down and leaning against the fence at its spring angle — exactly how it sits on the wall, just inverted, with the ceiling edge on the saw table and the wall edge against the fence. For inside corners, pros often cope: leave the first piece square into the corner, then cut the second piece’s profile with a coping saw so it fits over the face of the first. Nail the molding to the wall and ceiling framing (or to a backer) with finish nails, keeping the spring angle consistent along the run. Caulk the top and bottom edges to the wall and ceiling, fill nail holes and any corner gaps with wood filler, sand lightly, and paint.
