A random orbital sander spins and randomly orbits a round pad, removing material quickly and leaving a swirl-free finish, which makes it the best all-purpose sander; a sheet (finishing) sander vibrates a flat rectangular pad in small orbits, sanding gently and reaching flush into square corners. For flat surfaces and general smoothing, choose the random orbital. For fine finishing and getting into inside corners and edges, the sheet sander does what the round pad can't. Many workshops keep both, but if you buy one, make it the random orbital.
What's the difference?
The difference is the pad shape and the motion. A random orbital sander drives a round pad in two motions at once — the disc spins on its axle while the whole pad orbits in small circles, and because those two motions aren't synchronized, no scratch ever repeats. That combination cuts fast and hides scratches. A sheet sander (also called a finishing or palm sander) vibrates a flat rectangular pad in tiny fixed orbits; it removes material slowly but its square corners reach into places a round disc can't. The random orbital is an aggressive-yet-clean generalist; the sheet sander is a gentle detail finisher.

Which is better for your project?
For tabletops, doors, cabinet faces, plywood and furniture — anything with broad flat surfaces — the random orbital is faster and leaves a cleaner surface for stain or finish. For trim, molding, raised-panel doors, window frames and any piece with lots of inside corners, the sheet sander earns its place because its square edges finish flush where the round pad leaves a sanded ring short of the corner. If your work is mostly flat panels, the random orbital alone is enough; if it's detailed millwork, you'll want the sheet sander too.
Can you use one instead of the other?
Partly. A random orbital handles the finishing a sheet sander does, just not into square corners — you can get most of the way there and finish the last inch by hand. A sheet sander can smooth a flat surface, but it's slow and won't strip or level stock efficiently, so using it for whole-surface work is tedious. Neither replaces the other cleanly: the random orbital can't reach corners, and the sheet sander can't remove material at any real pace.

Which should you buy?
Buy the random orbital first — it's the sander that does the most jobs well, and a 5-inch model with dust extraction covers the bulk of home projects. Add a quarter-sheet or detail sander when your work turns to trim, corners and fine finishing. If budget allows only one tool, the random orbital is the clear pick.
