A random orbital sander spins and randomly orbits a round pad, removing material quickly and leaving a swirl-free finish, which makes it the best all-purpose sander; a sheet (finishing) sander vibrates a flat rectangular pad in small orbits, sanding gently and reaching flush into square corners. What's the difference?

Which is better for your project?

For tabletops, doors, cabinet faces, plywood and furniture — anything with broad flat surfaces — the random orbital is faster and leaves a cleaner surface for stain or finish. For trim, molding, raised-panel doors, window frames and any piece with lots of inside corners, the sheet sander earns its place because its square edges finish flush where the round pad leaves a sanded ring short of the corner.
