A benchtop router table is an intermediate build that dramatically expands what your router can do, and it’s a great use of shop scraps. A simple version costs 30 to 100 dollars beyond the router (mostly a mounting plate and hardware) and takes a day. There’s nothing structural or permitted about it, but because it turns a router into a semi-stationary cutting tool, the safety details matter: a dead-flat top, the router flush-mounted, a straight fence, and only exposing the bit you need. Done right it makes routing small parts safer and more precise than freehand.
Tools and materials

- Materials: MDF or doubled 3/4-inch plywood for a flat top, plywood for the fence, laminate or wax for a slick surface, and featherboards and push blocks for safe feeding.

Step 1: Build a dead-flat top
Make the top from MDF or two layers of 3/4-inch plywood glued together — thick and flat. Check it with a straightedge; a warped top makes the workpiece rock and the cuts inconsistent. A laminate skin or a coat of paste wax makes the surface slick so stock glides. Size it to sit on your bench or in a simple frame with legs.
Step 2: Mount the router flush
Recess a mounting plate into the top so its surface sits dead flush with the tabletop, then bolt your router to the plate — or direct-mount the router base under the top with the baseplate removed. Flush is critical: a plate that sits proud or low makes the workpiece catch. Confirm with a straightedge across the plate and top.

Step 3: Cut the bit opening
Bore or rout an opening in the top (and plate) for the bit to project through, sized for your largest bit with clearance. Insert-ring plates that shrink the opening around smaller bits are ideal because a large gap around a small bit lets little parts drop in. With the router mounted and unplugged, raise a bit to check clearance.
Step 4: Build a straight fence with dust port
Make an L-shaped fence from two pieces of plywood joined square, with a notch or opening for the bit and a dust port behind it connected to your vacuum. The fence must be straight and clamp solidly to the top. Being able to slide the fence adjusts how much bit is exposed. Add a hole and hose fitting so chips get sucked away at the source.

Step 5: Set up for safe routing
Expose only as much bit as the cut requires. Feed the workpiece against the bit’s rotation — right to left along the fence on a standard table. Use featherboards to hold stock against the fence and push blocks to keep hands clear of the bit on small or narrow parts. Unplug the router to change bits. These habits are what make table routing safer than freehand for small work.
