An impact driver is used to drive long screws, lag bolts, deck screws and structural fasteners that would stall an ordinary drill. It combines rotation with rapid concussive blows in the direction of turn, producing roughly 1,500 to 2,000 in-lb of torque against the 400 to 700 in-lb a typical cordless drill delivers. That makes it the right tool for decking, framing, fence building, subfloor screws, cabinet installs and stubborn bolts. It is not for drilling holes, and its lack of a clutch makes it a poor choice for delicate hardware.
What jobs is an impact driver actually best at?
The impact driver is best on any fastener long enough or tight enough that a drill would stop turning and twist your wrist instead. That means 3 inch deck screws, 4 to 6 inch structural screws, lag bolts into joists, ledger boards, fence rails, subfloor screws, hurricane ties and self-tapping screws into steel studs. It also frees seized bolts: with a hex-shank socket adapter it will break loose fasteners that a hand ratchet will not, because the hammer blows deliver shock rather than steady pressure. Owners consistently report that the moment they stop stripping deck screws is the moment they switch to one.

How does the impact mechanism work?
Inside the housing sits a spring-loaded hammer and an anvil. Under light load the tool spins like a normal driver. When resistance rises past a set point, the hammer disengages, spins up and strikes the anvil rotationally, then repeats several thousand times a minute. Each blow delivers a burst of torque far larger than the motor could apply continuously, and because the force is delivered in pulses, almost none of it is transmitted back to your wrist. This is why a small, light tool can sink a lag screw that a much larger drill cannot, and why the sound is a rattling chatter rather than a whine.

What should you not use an impact driver for?
Do not use one for drilling holes with round-shank bits, for masonry, or for anything that needs a gentle stop. The 1/4 inch hex collet will not grip a standard twist-bit shank, and there is no mechanical clutch to halt the tool before a fastener bottoms out. The specific failures owners report are consistent: snapped brass and stainless screws, cam-out damage on cabinet hardware, cracked plastic housings on appliance assembly, and drywall screws driven straight through the paper face. How much torque do you actually need?
Manufacturer figures are peak numbers measured on a test rig, so treat them as a ranking rather than a promise. As a practical guide, an 1,800 in-lb class tool such as the DeWalt DCF850 or the Milwaukee M18 FUEL line has no trouble with 6 inch structural screws in framing lumber. Anything above about 1,400 in-lb will build a deck without complaint.
- 12V compact, 1,000–1,300 in-lb — cabinets, hinges, light framing, overhead work where head length matters.
- 18V/20V standard, 1,400–1,800 in-lb — the homeowner default: decking, fencing, lags, subfloor.
- 18V/20V high output, 1,800–2,200 in-lb — daily framing, timber screws, heavy automotive fasteners.
Look for a three-speed or four-speed electronic mode selector as well as raw torque. A low mode that limits the blow rate is what makes an impact driver usable on smaller fasteners, and it is the feature most often missing from budget models.

What bits and accessories does it need?
Only impact-rated, 1/4 inch hex-shank accessories. Impact-rated bits are formulated to flex rather than shatter under repeated shock, and torsion-zone bits add a deliberately twistable section in the shank to absorb the blow. A hex-shank socket adapter turns the tool into a light-duty nut runner for lag bolts and lawn equipment hardware, and hex-shank drill bits let it make pilot holes in a pinch.
