How We Rank
The most important thing to know
We do not test products first-hand. We do not buy, install or physically handle the products we rank. Every score on this site comes from aggregated owner reviews, star ratings, review volume and expert consensus gathered from public sources — never a physical trial run by our team.
Why We Rank This Way
A single first-hand test tells you about one unit, used by one household, on one day. It cannot tell you how a mower starts on a cold morning a year in, or whether a vacuum's battery still holds a charge after two hundred cycles. Owners who have lived with a product for months can tell you that. So instead of testing a handful of units ourselves, we read thousands of the reviews those owners left behind, and we look for what they consistently report — the patterns that show up again and again across different homes, climates and use cases.
That is the "consensus" in our consensus score: not one opinion, but the pattern across many.
Our 4-Step Research Routine
Gather
We pull together public owner reviews, star ratings and review counts from major retailers, plus expert write-ups and long-term owner discussions from forums and communities.
Read & Analyze
We read through what buyers consistently report after actually living with the product — recurring praise, recurring complaints, and how a product holds up over months of use.
Weigh & Compare
Every product in a category is scored against the same criteria — performance, build quality, ease of use and value — so a score means the same thing across an entire hub.
Verdict & Score
We publish a clear, visual consensus score labelled with the review count behind it, plus who the product suits and who should look elsewhere.
Reading A Consensus Score
Every ranked product carries a visual consensus score, labelled with the number of reviews it is built from — never a bare number pulled from nowhere.
The bar reflects where a product sits relative to its category, the number tells you the score on a ten-point scale, and the review count tells you how much owner data stands behind it. A 9.0 built from four reviews is worth far less than an 8.2 built from twelve thousand — we favour the latter, and we always show the count so you can judge for yourself.
What We Never Do
- We do not buy the products we rank.
- We do not physically test, install or use the products ourselves.
- We do not accept payment, free products, or any other consideration in exchange for a favourable ranking.
- We do not let commission rate decide what ranks first — fit for the reader always comes first.
If any of that ever changes, we will say so plainly and label the affected content. Full detail on how the site makes money lives on our Affiliate Disclosure page.
About Our Method
Does that mean the reviews are not trustworthy?
It means the opposite of a single reviewer's opinion. A consensus score built from thousands of owner reviews smooths out one person's bad day, one defective unit, or one unrealistic expectation. We trust the pattern across many owners more than we would trust our own first impression of a single unit.
Why not just test the products yourselves?
First-hand testing of one unit tells you about that one unit, on that one day, in that one household. It cannot tell you how a product performs across a thousand different homes, climates and use cases over a year of ownership — and that is exactly what matters when you are deciding what to buy. Aggregated owner data answers the question a single test cannot.
How do you handle fake or incentivised reviews?
We weigh review volume and rating trends over time rather than any single review, and we discount patterns that look manipulated — a sudden spike of near-identical five-star reviews, for example. We also cross-reference with independent expert write-ups so no single source carries the whole verdict.
Do commissions ever change a ranking?
No. If the owner reviews say a product is mediocre, we say so, even on products where we would earn a commission. Our full policy is on the Affiliate Disclosure page.
How often are rankings updated?
We revisit rankings as prices change, new models launch, and review patterns shift. Every page carries a last-updated date so you know how current the advice is.
