A steam mop pumps water from a small tank onto an electric heating element that flash-boils it to roughly 200 to 250°F, then forces the vapor down through holes in the mop head and into a microfiber pad pressed against the floor. Heat softens and loosens grime, the pad grabs and holds it, and the tiny volume of water involved evaporates in a minute or two. There is no detergent and no bucket. Most units heat in 20 to 30 seconds and steam for 15 to 25 minutes on a full tank.

What are the parts inside a steam mop?
Every steam mop, from a 40 dollar stick model to a 200 dollar one, is the same five components in a different shell. The differences between models come down to boiler wattage, how the steam is metered, and pad quality:

Why does steam clean without detergent?
Because heat does the chemistry that detergent normally does. Dried food, sugar residue, grease films and sticky spills all soften as their temperature rises, and vapor at over 200°F delivers that heat right at the surface faster than warm mop water can. The pad then does the mechanical half of the job: microfiber has split fibers with enormous surface area that trap loosened soil instead of smearing it. That is why a used steam pad comes off gray even on a floor that looked clean, and why swapping to a fresh pad partway through a large floor makes a visible difference.

Which floors can steam mops be used on?
Steam mops are designed for sealed, hard, heat-tolerant floors: ceramic and porcelain tile, natural stone that is sealed, vinyl and luxury vinyl plank rated for it, and sealed grout. Manufacturers including Bissell and Shark specifically warn against unsealed wood, unsealed stone, and waxed or oiled floors, because vapor penetrates seams and gets under the finish. How do you get the best results from one?
Sweep or vacuum first, always. Fill with distilled water if you are on hard water, let it reach temperature, and work in overlapping passes at a walking pace, pausing a few seconds over stuck-on spots rather than scrubbing. Flip or change the pad when it stops looking dirty, which means it is saturated and is now redepositing soil. Empty the tank after every use, and never leave the hot head resting in one spot on a finished floor.
