The short answer: to get a stain out of clothes, act fast, blot up the excess without rubbing, rinse or pre-treat with the right product for that stain type, then wash — and never machine-dry until the stain is completely gone, because dryer heat sets most stains permanently. The reason technique matters so much is that different stains bond to fabric in different ways. - Speed wins. A fresh stain sits on top of the fibers; a set stain has bonded into them. Treat within minutes if you can.

- Work from the back. Flush the stain from the reverse side so you push it out of the fabric, not further through it.
- Test first, and read the care label. Dab any product on an inside seam to check for color change before treating the visible area.
- Never dry a stained garment. Heat from the dryer is what turns a removable stain into a permanent one. Air-check every treated item before it goes in.

Grease is the stain people most often set by accident, because water alone runs right off it. The fat needs a surfactant to break it up.
- Blot excess oil and sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder to absorb what you can; brush it off after 15 minutes.
- Work dish soap directly into the stain — dish soap is formulated to cut grease. Let it sit 5 to 10 minutes.
- Wash in the warmest water the fabric allows with a good detergent.
- Check before drying. A faint darkened patch means residual oil; repeat.

Protein stains: blood, sweat, egg, dairy
Protein stains are where cold water and enzymes earn their reputation. Enzyme detergents contain proteases that literally break the protein molecules apart.
- Rinse under cold running water from the back of the fabric to flush out as much as possible.
- Soak in cold water with an enzyme detergent for 30 minutes to several hours. Fresh blood often lifts with a plain cold soak alone.
- Rub a little enzyme detergent into what remains and let it sit.
- Wash cold and check before drying.

Dye and tannin stains: wine, coffee, tea, fruit, grass
These are colored compounds — dyes and tannins — that need to be oxidized out rather than just lifted.
- Red wine: blot, then flush with cold water. An oxygen-bleach soak is the most reliable follow-up. Salt and club soda help pull fresh wine before you can treat it properly, but they are a stopgap, not the cure.
- Coffee and tea: rinse cold from the back, pre-treat with detergent, then oxygen bleach if a shadow remains.
- Grass: an enzyme detergent works because grass stains are part protein, part chlorophyll dye. Pre-treat, soak, and wash.
- Fruit and berry: flush with cold water immediately; hot water sets fruit dyes fast.
