Brown spots on hydrangea leaves are most often caused by a fungal leaf spot disease, usually Cercospora, which produces small tan-to-purple spots with darker halos on lower leaves in warm, humid weather. Other common causes are sunscald (large dry brown patches on the sunniest leaves), water stress (crispy brown leaf edges and tips), and, less often, bacterial leaf spot or anthracnose. Identify the Cause of Brown Spots on Hydrangea Leaves First
The pattern and location of the spots tell you what you are dealing with. Look before you treat, because the fixes are completely different.

Cercospora leaf spot, the usual culprit
Cercospora is by far the most common cause of brown spotting, especially on bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) and oakleaf hydrangeas. It appears in mid to late summer as small circular spots, tan in the center with a purple or brown ring, starting on the lowest leaves where humidity is highest and splashing rain lands soil-borne spores. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes it as largely a cosmetic disease that rarely causes serious harm, though heavy infection can yellow and drop lower leaves.
Management is mostly cultural: remove and discard infected and fallen leaves (do not compost them), water at the base in the morning so foliage stays dry, and thin crowded stems for airflow. If spotting is severe year after year, a fungicide containing chlorothalonil or a copper product, applied at the first sign and repeated on the label interval, protects new growth. Spraying existing spots does not erase them; it prevents new infections.
Anthracnose and bacterial leaf spot
Anthracnose is less common but more damaging. It shows as larger irregular brown blotches, sometimes with concentric target-like rings, and can appear on both leaves and flowers, often after periods of warm wet weather and heavy fertilization. Because it can cause dieback, prune out affected tissue promptly and avoid overhead watering.
Bacterial leaf spot produces angular, water-soaked brown spots that are limited by the leaf veins, giving them a blocky rather than round shape. Bacteria spread in splashing water and enter through wounds, so avoid working around wet plants and disinfect pruners between cuts. There is no cure once a leaf is infected; management is sanitation, airflow, and removing affected leaves. Copper-based products offer some preventive protection.
Sunscald and Leaf Scorch on Hydrangeas
Not every brown spot is a disease. Bigleaf hydrangeas in particular scorch in hot afternoon sun, especially in zones 7 and warmer, producing large dry bleached-brown patches on the most exposed leaves rather than discrete spotted rings. The tell is location: the damage clusters on the sunniest side and the upper canopy, and the spots are dry and papery rather than haloed.
The fix is not a spray. Water stress and browning edges
Brown, crispy leaf margins that spread inward usually signal water stress. Hydrangeas have shallow, thirsty roots, and the name itself comes from the Greek for water. Underwatering causes the classic dry brown edges and midday wilting; overwatering causes root suffocation that also browns leaves, but with a softer, sometimes yellowing look and soggy soil.
Aim for evenly moist, never waterlogged, soil: about an inch of water per week, delivered deeply at the base, more in heat. Mulch to buffer moisture swings. Step-by-step treatment plan
- Diagnose. Match the spot pattern to the table above before doing anything.
- Sanitize. Remove the worst-spotted leaves and rake up every fallen leaf; bag them, do not compost. This alone breaks most of the fungal cycle.
- Fix watering. Switch to deep base watering in the morning only. Keep foliage dry.
- Open up airflow. Thin crowded interior stems and space plants so leaves dry quickly after rain.
- Spray only if needed. For active, spreading fungal spots, apply a labeled fungicide (chlorothalonil or copper) on the first new growth and repeat per the label. Skip this for sunscald or water stress.
- Mulch and feed lightly. Maintain 2 to 3 inches of mulch; avoid heavy nitrogen, which fuels soft, disease-prone growth.
Preventing brown spots next year
- Clean up in fall. Overwintering spores live in fallen leaves; a thorough fall cleanup is the most effective single prevention step.
