An electric air duster pays for itself over a couple of seasons against canned air and has no propellant to freeze the plastic. If you use canned air, keep it upright and use short bursts — tipping the can sprays liquid propellant, which can crack the housing and leave residue on the motor.

The ten-minute method
- Unplug the fan. Not switched off — unplugged from the wall. A tower fan holds enough stored energy in the motor to turn the impeller when you disturb it.
- Move it outside, into a garage, or over a large trash bag. This job makes a mess indoors and there is no way around it.
- Vacuum the rear intake grille first, using the brush attachment and working along the slats rather than across them. This is where the bulk of the dust lives, since all the air enters here.
- Vacuum the front outlet grille and the oscillation slot at the base.
- Brush the stubborn deposits loose with a detail brush, then vacuum again. Caked dust in a humid room binds into a felt that suction alone will not lift.
- Hold the impeller still. Insert a skewer or chopstick through the front grille to jam the blade cylinder gently. Do not force it.
- Blow compressed air through the rear grille in short bursts, angling toward the front so the dust exits rather than being driven deeper. Work top to bottom, moving the skewer to rotate the impeller a little at a time so you reach every blade face.
- Vacuum whatever landed on the floor and the grilles, then repeat the air-and-vacuum cycle once more. Two passes gets far more out than one long one.
- Clean between blades with a pipe cleaner or a microfiber strip pushed through the grille slats if the blades are still visibly gray. Slow, but it is the only way to reach them without opening the case.
- Wipe the housing and control panel with a barely damp microfiber cloth, then dry immediately. Keep moisture away from the vents.
- Check the remote battery contacts while you are there, and wipe the display window.
- Wait 20 minutes before plugging it back in if you used any damp cloth near the vents, then run it on low outdoors or by an open window for a minute to blow out anything left.

If yours has a filter
Some tower fans, particularly bladeless designs and models sold as fan-and-purifier combinations, have a removable rear filter or foam screen that slides out without tools. Check the manual before assuming yours does not — the panel is often a friction-fit rectangle on the back. Where a filter exists:
- Foam or mesh pre-filters can be rinsed in cool water and must be completely dry before reinstalling. Damp foam grows mold within days in a warm room.
- Pleated HEPA or carbon filters are not washable. Vacuum the surface gently and replace on the manufacturer's schedule, usually 6 to 12 months, at $15 to $50.
- Never run the fan without its filter if one is fitted — the internals are designed around it and dust otherwise goes straight to the motor.

Why tower fans get dirty faster than other fans
It is worth understanding the geometry, because it explains both the cleaning problem and why the fix has to be dry rather than wet.
A tower fan uses a cross-flow or tangential impeller — a tall cylinder with dozens of small curved blades running its full height, spinning inside a scroll housing. Air enters through a fine rear grille across the whole height of the unit and exits through a narrow front slot. That design is what makes a tower fan quiet and gives it an even column of air, and it is also what makes it a very effective dust trap: the intake area is large, the blade surfaces are numerous and closely spaced, and the airflow path turns sharply, so particles drop out of the stream and stick.
Two consequences follow. Dust builds fastest on the leading edges of the blades and on the rear grille, which is why those are the two places to concentrate effort. And because a cross-flow impeller is long and light, dust that accumulates unevenly along its length produces a low-frequency rumble or a periodic tick that people mistake for a bearing failure — cleaning frequently fixes noise complaints that seem mechanical.
The other reason for regular cleaning is what the dust does when it gets damp. A fan stored over winter with a loaded impeller sits in a garage or closet absorbing humidity, and the organic component of household dust — skin cells, fabric fibers, pet dander — supports mold growth in those conditions. Safety: never open a fan that is plugged in, never run one with the case removed, and stop using any fan that smells of hot plastic, has a damaged cord, or trips a breaker.
