The short answer: if your window is a standard double-hung and your building allows it, a window unit wins — it cools faster, runs roughly 20 to 30 percent cheaper for the same BTU rating, and is quieter inside the room. Choose a portable only when a window unit is not an option: casement or sliding windows, high-rise rules that ban them, renters who cannot drill, or a unit you need to wheel between rooms. You pay for that flexibility in efficiency, noise and floor space.

Which one cools better for the money?

The window unit, and it is not close on efficiency. The U.S. Department of Energy rates the two on separate scales precisely because they are not comparable — window and through-wall units use the older EER and the current CEER, while portables have their own lower CEER because of a design flaw. A single-hose portable cools the room air but sends that same air outdoors as exhaust. The room ends up under slight negative pressure, so hot outside air sneaks in through door gaps, outlets and window frames to fill the void. A window unit has no such leak: the whole heat exchanger sits in the opening, cool air blows into the room, hot air blows outside, and nothing is drawn back in. When the portable is the right call

Plenty of windows cannot take a unit. Casement windows that crank outward, tall narrow apartment windows, and buildings that ban anything hanging over the sidewalk all rule out a standard window AC. Renters who cannot make holes, and anyone who wants to wheel one machine between a home office by day and a bedroom by night, are the other clear cases. In those situations a portable is not a compromise, it is the only thing that works — just size up a step, keep the exhaust hose short and straight, and expect a higher power bill. Install, venting and drainage

Both must vent outside — there is no ventless air conditioner, and any product marketed that way is really an evaporative cooler, which only helps in dry climates. A window unit is a two-person lift into the sash, then you screw the brackets and seal the side panels; the harder part is the weight, not the concept. A portable is easier to set up — clip the window kit in, attach the hose, plug it in — but it eats floor space and the loose hose radiates some heat back into the room. Which should you buy?

Buy a window unit if you have a compatible window, you want the lowest running cost and quietest room, and you do not need to move it around. It is the default for a reason. Buy a portable if your windows or building rule out a window unit, you rent, or you genuinely need one machine to cover several rooms — and if you do, spend up for a dual-hose model and do not under-size it. Is a portable AC as good as a window unit?

For raw cooling per dollar, no. A window unit of the same rated BTU cools a room faster and uses less electricity, because a single-hose portable pulls conditioned air out of the room and draws hot unconditioned air in from the rest of the house to replace it. Why is a portable AC less efficient?
