Installing LED strip lights is one of the easiest lighting projects there is — plan on an afternoon, $15 to $50 for a kit, and no wiring or permit. They run on low-voltage DC from a plug-in adapter, so there is no electrical box and no shock risk. The whole job is measure, degrease the surface, cut only at the marked lines, connect, and stick. The two things that go wrong — dead sections and peeling tape — both come down to connectors and surface prep, covered below.

Tools and materials
- An LED strip kit with a UL-listed power supply sized to your total length.
- Isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag to prep the surface.
- Scissors for cutting at the marked lines, and solderless clip connectors or corner connectors for turns and gaps.
- Tape measure and pencil.

Step 1: Measure and plan the run
Measure the length you want to light and where the power adapter will plug in — plan the driver's location so its cord reaches an outlet without showing. Keep any single 12V run under about 16 feet to avoid voltage drop dimming the far end; for longer runs, use a 24V strip or feed power to both ends. Note where the strip must turn a corner or bridge a gap so you can order the right connectors.
Step 2: Clean the surface
Wipe the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it flash dry. This one step is the difference between a strip that stays up for years and one that sags off in a month, especially near a kitchen or any warm, dusty spot.

Step 3: Cut to length at the marked lines
Cut only on the printed cut lines — the little scissor marks over the copper pads, every 2 to 4 inches. Cutting between them kills that segment. Dry-fit the cut pieces before removing any backing.
Step 4: Connect segments and test
Join pieces with solderless clip connectors or corner connectors, lining the copper pads up with the connector pins and matching the plus and minus arrows end to end. Plug in the assembled run and confirm the whole thing lights evenly before you commit adhesive — fixing a bad connector now beats peeling a stuck strip later.

Step 5: Stick it down and power up
Peel the backing a foot at a time and press the strip firmly along its line, working from the powered end. On ceilings, rough surfaces, or warm areas, add mounting clips or an aluminum channel so it does not fall. Connect the driver, plug in, and enjoy even, flicker-free light. Do not leave unused strip tightly coiled — heat concentrates in a coil.
Common mistakes
- Cutting off the marked lines. Kills a segment. Cut only on the icons.
- Skipping the alcohol wipe. The top cause of peeling. Degrease first.
- One long run with voltage drop. The far end dims. Feed both ends or use 24V.
- Mismatched connector polarity. Match the plus and minus arrows.
- An undersized or off-brand adapter. Use a UL-listed driver rated for your length.
When you need an electrician
Plug-in strips need no pro. You only involve a licensed electrician if you want the driver hidden inside the wall and fed from house wiring, or a hardwired architectural install — that crosses into circuit work and possibly a permit, jurisdiction-specific, and any panel work is never DIY. For everything most people want from strip lights, no wiring is involved at all.
