Replacing an over-the-range microwave is a two-person, two-hour intermediate job when it is a like-for-like swap that reuses the existing outlet, venting, and cabinet opening — no permit for a straight replacement. Budget the cost of the unit (roughly 200 to 500 dollars in 2026) plus a drill, a socket wrench, and a helper. The microwave hangs on a wall mounting plate lag-screwed into studs and bolts up through the cabinet above. Two safety lines: the wall plate must hit studs because the unit is heavy, and any new wiring, moved outlet, or new exterior venting is a job for a licensed electrician, not a DIY afternoon.

Step 1: Cut the power and remove the old unit
Switch off the breaker for the microwave circuit and confirm the outlet is dead. With a helper, remove the mounting bolts from inside the cabinet above and lift the old microwave off its wall plate — one person supports the weight while the other removes the last bolt. Unplug it and set it aside. Never work on the mounting hardware with the circuit live.
Step 2: Mount the new wall plate to studs
Hold the paper template against the wall and cabinet per the instructions and mark the wall-plate holes and the cabinet bolt holes. Locate the studs and lag-screw the wall mounting plate so it catches solid framing — this plate carries most of the microwave's weight, so it must hit studs, not just drywall. Level the plate before final tightening.

Step 3: Set the venting
Configure the blower for your setup: recirculating with a charcoal filter, or ducted up or out the back if a duct exists. Rotate the fan and install the correct filters per the manual before the unit goes up. Ducted-outside venting removes heat and steam far better; recirculating only filters. Match the configuration to your existing ductwork.
Step 4: Hang and bolt the microwave
Feed the power cord up into the cabinet, then, with your helper, lift the microwave and hook its bottom rear onto the wall plate. Hold it in place and drive the mounting bolts down through the cabinet bottom into the top of the microwave until snug. Both the wall plate and these bolts share the load — do not skip either.

Step 5: Restore power and test
Plug the unit into the cabinet outlet, restore the breaker, and test the light, fan, and a short run with a cup of water. Confirm the microwave is level and solid on the wall with a gentle check. If anything about the outlet, circuit, or new venting is not a straight reuse of what was there, stop and bring in a licensed electrician.
