The short answer: to reset a garbage disposal, reach under the sink and press the small red reset button on the underside of the unit until it clicks and stays flush, then restore power and test with cold water running. That button is a thermal-overload switch that pops out when the motor overheats or overloads, cutting power to protect it. What the garbage disposal reset button actually does

Inside every disposal is a thermal-overload protector. When the motor draws too much current — because it is jammed, overfilled, or overheated — this protector cuts power and the reset button pops out a few millimeters on the underside of the unit. It is exactly like a mini circuit breaker built into the appliance.

Pressing the button back in reconnects the motor. But here is the part people miss: if the underlying cause is still there — a jam, or a hot motor — the button will trip straight back out. The reset is not a fix; it is a re-arm. You have to remove the cause first.

Finding and pressing the garbage disposal reset button

  1. Turn off the wall switch for the disposal so it cannot start while your hand is nearby.
  2. Clear the space under the sink and get a flashlight. The disposal is the cylindrical unit hanging below the sink drain.
  3. Feel the underside for a small button, usually red, near the center or one side of the bottom. If it has tripped, it stands proud of the surface.
  4. Wait a few minutes if the motor is warm, then press the button firmly until it clicks and stays flush. If it will not stay in, the motor is still too hot — wait longer.
  5. Restore the wall switch, run cold water, and turn on the disposal to test.

Freeing a jam (the hum-no-spin case)

A humming disposal that will not spin is jammed. Do not keep flipping the switch — each attempt overheats the motor and trips the reset. Instead:

  1. Turn off the disposal and cut power at the switch. For safety, unplug it or flip the breaker.
  2. Find the hex wrench. A 1/4-inch Allen wrench came taped to the unit or clipped under the sink at installation. If it is lost, a standard 1/4-inch Allen key fits most brands.
  3. Insert it into the socket in the center of the underside and turn it back and forth. You are manually rotating the motor shaft to break the impellers free. It should loosen and spin freely.
  4. Look inside the chamber with a flashlight. Remove any bone, pit, or utensil with tongs or pliers — never your hand.
  5. Press the reset button, restore power, run cold water, and test.

When there is no hum at all

A completely silent disposal is a power issue. Check these in order:

  1. The reset button — the most common cause. Press it as above.
  2. The wall switch — confirm it is the right switch; kitchens often have several.
  3. The plug — many disposals plug into an outlet under the sink that is controlled by the wall switch. Make sure it is seated.
  4. The circuit breaker — check the panel for a tripped breaker, especially if the outlet is shared.
  5. The outlet itself — test it with another device. Some are on a GFCI that may have tripped.

If power is confirmed at the outlet, the reset is pressed in, and the unit is still dead, the motor or internal wiring has failed.

Why the garbage disposal keeps tripping

Where is the reset button on a garbage disposal?

It is a small red or occasionally black button on the underside of the disposal unit, usually near the center or off to one side of the bottom. You will need to reach under the sink and feel for it, often with a flashlight. Why does my garbage disposal keep tripping the reset?

How long should I wait before pressing the reset button?

Let the motor cool for a few minutes before pressing reset, especially if it tripped from overheating. Pressing it while the motor is still hot may not hold, and it can trip again immediately.
