Gas wins on sustained power and unlimited runtime; electric wins on noise, weight, maintenance, starting and — increasingly — on whether you are legally allowed to buy one at all. For a yard under about half an acre, a brushless battery blower now does everything a handheld gas blower does, and does it without mixed fuel, a pull cord or a fight with the neighbors. Past half an acre with heavy fall, or on wet matted leaves, gas backpack blowers still hold a real advantage in sustained airflow and instant refuelling.
That is the short version. What follows is the detail that actually decides it: the two spec numbers that matter, what runtime really means, the maintenance nobody mentions at the till, and the regulatory picture that is quietly removing one of the options.
CFM and MPH: The Only Two Numbers Worth Comparing
Leaf blowers are sold on air speed (MPH) because it is the bigger, more exciting number. It is the less useful one.
- CFM — cubic feet per minute is air volume. Volume is what moves a mass of leaves, keeps a pile rolling, and clears a wide swath in one pass.
- MPH — miles per hour is air speed. Speed is what breaks leaves loose from wet grass, gravel and cracks in a driveway.
You need both, and a blower with high MPH and low CFM is a common trap — it will unstick a leaf and then fail to move the pile anywhere. As a rough guide, a small yard is served by 350–450 CFM, a medium yard by 450–600, and anything above half an acre with real leaf fall wants 600 CFM or more, which in practice means a backpack.

Runtime: Do the Watt-Hour Maths
The single most useful thing you can learn about battery blowers is that voltage tells you almost nothing about runtime. Energy is watt-hours — volts multiplied by amp-hours. A 40V 2Ah pack holds 80Wh. A 40V 5Ah pack holds 200Wh and runs two and a half times as long on the same tool. Two blowers advertised as "40V" can differ by a factor of three in how long they work.
Manufacturers quote runtime at the lowest useful speed, in dry conditions, so treat the number on the box as a ceiling. Owners consistently report that boost or turbo mode drains a pack in eight to twelve minutes, which is fine for unsticking a wet corner and useless as a working mode. The practical approach is to work in low or medium and reserve boost for the stubborn patches — which is also what makes the difference between one battery and two.
Corded electric sidesteps the whole question and runs indefinitely, at the cost of dragging a 100-foot extension cord around trees. It remains the cheapest way to own a blower and it is genuinely fine for a small yard near an outlet.
Noise: Bigger Difference Than the Numbers Look
A gas two-stroke handheld typically produces around 95–102 dBA at the operator's ear; a comparable battery model runs roughly 85–95. That looks like a modest gap until you remember the decibel scale is logarithmic — a 10 dB reduction is perceived as about half as loud, and represents a tenfold drop in sound energy.
The bigger difference is spectral. Gas engines produce far more low-frequency energy, and low frequencies travel further and pass through walls better than high ones. That is why a gas blower three houses away is audible indoors and a battery blower next door often is not, and it is the specific reason municipal noise ordinances single out gas equipment.
Either way, wear hearing protection with a powerful blower. The Regulatory Picture Is One-Directional
This is the factor most buying guides underweight, and it will outlive whichever blower you buy. Small two-stroke engines are extraordinarily dirty relative to their size because they burn oil with the fuel and vent unburned mixture through the exhaust port. The California Air Resources Board has estimated that one hour of operating a commercial gas leaf blower produces smog-forming emissions comparable to driving a modern passenger car about 1,100 miles.
Consequently, CARB adopted regulations requiring most new small off-road engines sold in California to be zero-emission from 2024, covering leaf blowers, string trimmers and lawn mowers. Existing equipment is unaffected and there is no requirement to stop using a blower you own. But new sales are the pipeline for parts, dealers and service, and several other states and a long list of individual municipalities have introduced their own restrictions, most commonly seasonal bans or hour limits on gas blowers.
The practical implication for a homeowner is straightforward: if you are choosing between two blowers of similar capability and expect to keep one for ten years, the electric one is the safer bet on availability of parts and on your local rules not changing under you. Cost of Ownership Over Five Years
Sticker price flatters gas and misleads on battery. The real comparison includes fuel, oil, servicing and — for battery — the near-certainty of replacing a pack.

The two "predictable replacement" rows are the fair comparison people skip. Gas owners will eventually pay for carburettor work caused by ethanol fuel varnish; battery owners will eventually buy a new pack. Which One Should You Buy?
- Under a quarter-acre, near an outlet: corded electric. Cheapest, lightest, endless runtime, nothing to maintain.
- Quarter to half an acre: a brushless battery handheld with a 4Ah or larger pack. This is the right answer for most American households now.
- Half an acre to an acre: a battery backpack with two packs, or a gas handheld if you already own gas equipment and fuel.
- Over an acre, or heavy wet leaves, or commercial use: a gas backpack. This is the one job where gas is still clearly, measurably better.
