A backyard fire pit works best at 36 to 44 inches across the outside, with an interior fire bowl of 30 to 36 inches, a wall height of 12 to 14 inches, and seating placed 3 to 4 feet back from the rim. That size warms four to six people without burning through firewood at an unreasonable rate. Portable steel pits typically run 24 to 30 inches, which is right for a small patio and two to four people. Bigger is not better: past 48 inches, the group spreads out, the conversation breaks up, and the wood bill climbs.
What size fits my group?
| People | Outside diameter | Interior fire bowl | Seating circle needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 | 24–30 in. | 20–26 in. | 11–13 ft |
| 4–6 | 36–44 in. | 30–36 in. | 14–16 ft |
| 6–8 | 44–48 in. | 36–42 in. | 16–18 ft |
| 8+ | 48 in. or a linear fire table | 42 in.+ | 18 ft+ |
The seating circle is the number people underestimate. A 40-inch pit needs roughly 14 to 16 feet of clear ground to be comfortable — and that circle has to fit inside the code setback from the house, not overlap it. Check how far a fire pit should be from the house before you commit to a location, because the clearance rule frequently decides the size more than taste does.

Why does wall height change the experience?
Because it decides what a seated person actually sees. Standard patio chairs put the eye about 30 to 34 inches off the ground, so a rim at 12 to 14 inches keeps the flame in full view and lets radiant heat reach shins and knees. Push the wall to 18 or 20 inches — the height that makes the edge usable as a bench — and the flame disappears behind the rim unless the fire is stacked high. If you want both, build the pit at 14 inches and add a separate seat wall a few feet out. Gas fire tables sit higher, typically 24 to 30 inches, because the burner is at the top of the box rather than the bottom.

How does size affect wood consumption?
Roughly with area, not diameter, so a 44-inch pit burns about 50 percent more fuel per hour than a 36-inch one. In practice a mid-size pit consumes a quarter to a third of a standard hardware-store bundle per hour of steady burning. That cost compounds across a season and is one reason a right-sized pit gets used more often than an oversized one. It also affects fuel quality: a large pit tempts people to fill it with whatever wood is around, and damp or resinous fuel is what generates the smoke complaints discussed in are smokeless fire pits worth it.

What sizes should you build to if you are making one?
Retaining-wall block is sold in sizes that make certain diameters far easier than others, so plan the circle around whole blocks rather than a target number. A common approach is a 44-inch outer ring of trapezoidal wall block around a 36-inch steel fire ring insert, three courses high at about 4 inches per course, which lands at 12 inches. Use a steel ring liner in any masonry pit — direct flame contact on block and mortar causes spalling within a season or two. Dig 6 to 8 inches below grade, add compacted gravel for drainage, and set the first course dead level. Full step sequence is in how to build a fire pit, and the base under a portable pit is covered in what to put under a fire pit on grass.
Does the same sizing apply to portable pits?
Partly. Portable steel and double-wall pits state their diameter at the widest point of the bowl, and the usable fire area inside is often 6 to 8 inches smaller, so a 27-inch pit behaves like a 20-inch fire. Read the internal firebox dimension rather than the marketing figure, and check the maximum log length the manufacturer specifies — a pit that only takes 12-inch splits means cutting standard 16-inch firewood. Our best fire pit picks list interior dimensions alongside the headline size for exactly that reason.
