The short answer: to treat powdery mildew, first remove and bag the worst-infected leaves, then spray the plant with a proven fungicide — potassium bicarbonate, neem oil, sulfur, or a diluted milk solution — coating both sides of the leaves and repeating every 7 to 14 days. At the same time, fix the conditions that caused it: improve air circulation, increase sunlight, and stop crowding. You cannot erase the white coating from leaves already infected, but you can halt the spread and let the plant grow out clean new foliage.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that shows up as a white to grayish powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes flowers and fruit, most often in mid to late summer. It afflicts a huge range of plants — squash and cucumbers, roses, phlox, lilacs, zinnias, grapes, and many more. It rarely kills a plant outright but weakens it, reduces yield and bloom, and disfigures foliage. Confirm it is powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is one of the easiest plant diseases to recognize:

Distinguish it from downy mildew, which shows fuzzy growth on leaf undersides with yellow patches on top and needs wet conditions. Powdery mildew is on the upper surfaces and does not require leaf wetness. The University of California IPM program notes that powdery mildew fungi are among the most widespread and easily recognized of all plant diseases.

Why it appears — the conditions

Powdery mildew is unusual among plant diseases because it does not need free water on the leaf to infect. It favors warm days, cool nights, high humidity in the air around the foliage, shade, and poor air movement — the classic late-summer combination. Spores overwinter on infected plant debris and dormant buds, then travel on the wind to new leaves when conditions turn favorable. Crowded plantings, shady sites, and excess nitrogen fertilizer that pushes soft new growth all make it worse. Understanding this is what makes prevention work: you are managing humidity, airflow, and light, not just spraying.

Step one: remove infected material

Before spraying, prune away the most heavily coated leaves and stems and bag them for the trash — do not compost them, as the spores can survive. Removing the worst infection reduces the spore load, opens up the plant for better airflow, and gives your spray a fighting chance. Clean pruners with rubbing alcohol between cuts and between plants, and avoid handling other plants right after working among infected ones.

Step Two: The Effective Powdery Mildew Sprays

Several treatments are well supported. Apply to both leaf surfaces, in the cool of morning or evening, never in hot sun, and reapply on schedule.

Whatever you choose, start early — treatments work far better as prevention or on light infection than on a plant already coated white. Repeat every 7 to 14 days and after rain. The milk spray, in more detail

The milk treatment is more than folklore. Studies on cucurbits and other crops have found that a spray of roughly 40 percent milk to 60 percent water, applied in bright light, suppresses powdery mildew comparably to some conventional fungicides, apparently because milk proteins produce compounds that are toxic to the fungus when exposed to sunlight. It is cheap, safe, and food-crop friendly. Apply on a sunny day, coat both leaf surfaces, and repeat weekly. Overuse can occasionally cause a harmless surface mold from the milk residue, so do not exceed the dilution.

Can powdery mildew be cured or only prevented?

You can stop it from spreading and protect new growth, but you cannot make the white coating vanish from leaves already infected. Treatments like potassium bicarbonate, neem, and sulfur kill active fungus and prevent new infection, so the plant recovers by pushing out clean new leaves while the damaged ones fade. Badly infected leaves are best removed. So the honest answer is that treatment plus prevention controls powdery mildew and lets the plant outgrow it, rather than erasing existing damage.

Does baking soda get rid of powdery mildew?

It helps but potassium bicarbonate works better. A baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) spray at about one tablespoon per gallon of water with a few drops of soap can suppress powdery mildew, but the sodium can build up and burn foliage or affect soil with repeated use. Potassium bicarbonate, sold as a labeled fungicide, does the same job more effectively and without the sodium problem. If you use baking soda, apply it sparingly, test a leaf first, and do not spray in hot sun.

Will powdery mildew spread to my other plants?

Yes, readily, through airborne spores, though there is a nuance: powdery mildew fungi are fairly host-specific, so the strain on your squash generally will not jump to your roses or lilacs, and vice versa. But it spreads easily among the same or related plants, so an infected zucchini can infect your other cucurbits. Remove and bag infected leaves rather than composting them, space plants for air flow, and avoid working among wet, infected plants to limit the spread.

Does powdery mildew need wet leaves to grow?

No, and this sets it apart from most plant diseases. Unlike downy mildew and most fungal problems, powdery mildew does not need free water on the leaf to infect, it thrives in warm days, cool nights, high humidity, and shade, and can worsen in dry conditions. That is why simply keeping leaves dry does not prevent it. Improving air circulation, increasing sunlight, and avoiding crowding matter more than avoiding wet foliage for this particular disease.
