How Many Watts Does a Pool Pump Use?

A 1.5 HP single-speed pool pump draws about 1,500 to 2,000 watts, and a 1 HP unit about 1,000 to 1,400 watts, running flat out. The same pool circulated by a variable-speed pump at 1,200 to 1,800 RPM draws only 100 to 400 watts. That gap is not marketing — power consumption falls with the cube of motor speed, so halving the RPM cuts power to roughly one eighth while flow only halves, a point ENERGY STAR makes in the same terms. Above-ground pumps typically draw 600 to 1,200 watts on a 120V circuit.

What does each type of pool pump draw?

Nameplate horsepower is a poor guide because the real draw depends on service factor and on how hard your plumbing makes the pump work. The figures below are typical operating draws for residential pumps on normally sized plumbing.

Cost figures use 17 cents per kilowatt-hour, close to the US residential average reported by the Energy Information Administration as of 2026. Rates vary widely by state, from around 11 cents in parts of the South to well over 30 cents in California and the Northeast, so multiply the daily kilowatt-hours by your own rate from your utility bill for a real number.

Why does slowing the pump down save so much?

Because pumps follow the affinity laws. Flow is proportional to speed, head is proportional to the square of speed, and power is proportional to the cube of speed. Drop a pump from 3,450 RPM to 1,725 RPM and you get half the flow for roughly one eighth of the power. Run twice as long to move the same total gallons and you have used about a quarter of the energy for identical turnover.

What actually changes your pump wattage day to day?

Four things move the number, and three of them are under your control.

To cut consumption without new hardware, clean the filter on pressure rather than on the calendar, shorten single-speed run hours to the minimum that achieves one turnover, and shift run time out of any expensive time-of-use window. How many watts does a 1 HP pool pump use?

Roughly 1,000 to 1,400 watts for a single-speed 1 HP pump running at full speed, depending on service factor and the resistance of your plumbing. Read the motor nameplate rather than the box: multiply the rated amps by the rated volts to get a ceiling figure, and expect actual draw to be somewhat below that on a well-plumbed system. A restricted or dirty filter pushes the pump up its curve and changes the draw, which is one more reason to watch the pressure gauge.

Does a pool pump use more electricity than an air conditioner?

Over a month, often yes, and that surprises people. A central air conditioner draws far more while running but cycles on and off, while a single-speed pool pump runs a steady 1.5 to 2 kilowatts for eight to twelve hours every day of the season. The Department of Energy has described pool pumps as one of the largest single electricity loads in homes that have them, which is why dedicated-purpose pool pumps got their own federal efficiency standard.

How do I measure my actual pool pump wattage?

Put a clamp meter on one of the motor leads and read the amps while the pump runs at its normal speed, then multiply by the supply voltage. On a 240V circuit measure one leg and multiply by 240. A plug-in energy monitor works for a 120V above-ground pump. Many variable-speed pumps display live watts on the keypad, which is the easiest reading of all. Take the measurement with a clean filter, because a loaded filter changes the operating point.

Do variable-speed pumps really save that much?

The saving is physics rather than marketing. Flow falls in direct proportion to motor speed but power falls with the cube of speed, so halving the RPM gives half the flow for one eighth the power. Running twice as long to move the same water therefore uses about a quarter of the energy. Owners switching from single-speed to variable-speed consistently report pump electricity dropping by 60 to 80 percent, which is why the Department of Energy conservation standard effectively made variable-speed the default replacement.

What size generator runs a pool pump?

Size for starting surge, not running watts. A single-speed induction motor can draw three to five times its running current for a fraction of a second at startup, so a pump running at 1,800 watts may need 5,000 to 7,000 starting watts. Variable-speed pumps ramp up gradually and have a much gentler surge, but they can be sensitive to the waveform of a cheap generator, so an inverter generator is the safer choice. Have an electrician set up any generator connection, since backfeeding a household circuit is dangerous and against code.
