A 1.5 HP single-speed pool pump draws about 1,500 to 2,000 watts, and a 1 HP unit about 1,000 to 1,400 watts, running flat out. The same pool circulated by a variable-speed pump at 1,200 to 1,800 RPM draws only 100 to 400 watts. That gap is not marketing — power consumption falls with the cube of motor speed, so halving the RPM cuts power to roughly one eighth while flow only halves, a point ENERGY STAR makes in the same terms. What does each type of pool pump draw?
Nameplate horsepower is a poor guide because the real draw depends on service factor and on how hard your plumbing makes the pump work. The figures below are typical operating draws for residential pumps on normally sized plumbing.

Cost figures use 17 cents per kilowatt-hour, close to the US residential average reported by the Energy Information Administration as of 2026. Rates vary widely by state, from around 11 cents in parts of the South to well over 30 cents in California and the Northeast, so multiply the daily kilowatt-hours by your own rate from your utility bill for a real number.

Why does slowing the pump down save so much?
Because pumps follow the affinity laws. Flow is proportional to speed, head is proportional to the square of speed, and power is proportional to the cube of speed. Drop a pump from 3,450 RPM to 1,725 RPM and you get half the flow for roughly one eighth of the power. Run twice as long to move the same total gallons and you have used about a quarter of the energy for identical turnover.

The right-hand column is the number that matters: energy per gallon moved falls by roughly seven times between full speed and low speed. This is exactly why ENERGY STAR rates pool pumps on an energy factor in gallons per watt-hour rather than on horsepower, and why the federal dedicated-purpose pool pump standard reshaped the market. What actually changes your pump wattage day to day?
Four things move the number, and three of them are under your control.
- Filter condition. A loaded filter raises head pressure and shifts the operating point. On a single-speed pump that can slightly lower amps while badly reducing flow, so energy per gallon rises. On a variable-speed pump holding a set flow, watts climb directly.
- Plumbing size. Undersized pipe adds friction the pump has to overcome for the entire life of the system. Two inch pipe instead of 1.5 inch measurably lowers watts per gallon.
- Water features and cleaners. A waterfall, spa spillover, solar heater or pressure-side cleaner all demand high flow and force high-RPM operation for the period they run.
- Service factor. A motor rated 1.0 HP with a 1.65 service factor draws far more than a true 1.0 HP motor. Compare total horsepower, meaning nameplate horsepower times service factor, when shopping.
To cut consumption without new hardware, clean the filter on pressure rather than on the calendar, shorten single-speed run hours to the minimum that achieves one turnover, and shift run time out of any expensive time-of-use window.
