The short answer: attach the vacuum head to the pole and hose, lower it into the pool, then purge all the air from the hose by feeding it slowly into the water or holding the free end in front of a return jet until bubbles stop. Cap the skimmer with a vacuum plate (or push the hose end into the skimmer suction port), then vacuum in slow, overlapping, straight passes at about one foot per second. Set the multiport to filter for normal dirt and waste for algae or heavy silt. Allow 20 to 40 minutes.

Match the head to the surface. A wheeled head drags and scratches a vinyl liner; a soft brush head on rough plaster wears out fast and does not pick up as well. Above-ground pools with soft liners should always use a brush-style head.

The procedure
- Skim and net the surface first, then brush the walls, steps and any shaded corners where algae starts. Wait 20 to 30 minutes for the dislodged material to settle before vacuuming.
- Empty the pump basket and skimmer basket. A full basket kills suction before you begin, and it is the first thing to check if the vacuum feels weak.
- Assemble the head onto the pole, then push the hose onto the head fitting until it seats fully. A loose hose-to-head joint pulls air.
- Lower the head to the bottom and hold it there with the pole.
- Purge the hose completely. Either feed the hose into the water hand over hand so it fills as it sinks, or hold the free end over a return jet until water runs from the far end and bubbles stop rising from the vacuum head. Do not skip this. Air pushed into the pump breaks prime, and on a suction-side leak it can be enough to run the pump dry.
- Connect without letting air in. Cap the free end of the hose with your palm, carry it underwater to the skimmer, and push it into the suction port beneath the basket, or onto the vacuum plate seated on top of the basket. Some above-ground setups connect at a dedicated vacuum line or a threaded return fitting instead.
- Set the valve. Multiport filters: filter for routine dirt, waste for algae and silt. If your system has multiple suction lines, close the main drain partly so more suction is directed to the skimmer.
- Vacuum in slow, straight, overlapping passes, working from the shallow end toward the deep end and overlapping each pass by a few inches. Roughly one foot per second is the pace. Faster stirs the dirt back into the water column.
- Monitor pressure and baskets. If the filter gauge climbs 8 to 10 psi above its clean reading, stop, backwash or rinse the cartridge, and resume.
- Top up the water if vacuuming to waste. Waste mode discharges pool water continuously, and a level that falls below the skimmer mouth pulls air and can run the pump dry.
- Shut down properly. Turn the pump off before disconnecting, return the valve to filter, empty both baskets, rinse and drain the hose, and store it coiled out of the sun.

If the suction is weak or drops off

Technique details that separate a good job from a bad one
The mechanics are simple; the finesse is in a handful of habits that most people work out only after a season or two.
- Start at the shallow end and work toward the deep end. Debris you disturb drifts downhill toward the deep end, so working in that direction means you collect it rather than chase it back uphill.
- Keep the head flat on the floor. Tipping the head lets water bypass the intake slot, and suction falls sharply. On sloped floors, shorten your grip on the pole so you can hold the head down as it travels.
- Overlap each pass by about a third of the head width. A vacuum head does not clean uniformly across its full width, and edge-to-edge passes leave visible stripes on plaster.
- Work the corners and steps last, with short strokes. Those are the spots where fine silt collects and where a fast pass will simply lift it into suspension for the filter to deal with.
- Do not lift the head out of the water mid-session. Breaking the surface pulls a slug of air straight into the pump and you will lose prime and have to purge the hose again.
- Manage the hose. Drape it over your shoulder or lay it in a wide arc so it does not loop back and kink. A kinked hose starves the pump and is one of the most common causes of the suction fading for no obvious reason.
- Watch the water clarity behind you. If a plume follows the head, you are moving too fast or your filter is passing fines back into the pool.
For above-ground pools, two adaptations matter. Use a brush-style head rather than a wheeled one, because wheels scuff and eventually mark a soft vinyl liner. And expect suction to be gentler overall — above-ground pumps are smaller, plumbing runs are shorter but narrower, and the skimmer sits high on the wall, so you may need to close off the main return partly to concentrate suction at the vacuum line.
How often, and when to automate
