To use a stud finder, hold it flat against the wall over an empty spot, press and hold the button to calibrate, then slide it slowly sideways until it signals a stud edge — mark that edge, keep going to find the other edge, and the stud sits between the two marks. A stud finder locates the wooden framing behind drywall so you can anchor heavy items into solid wood instead of hollow wall. The whole job is calibrate, scan slowly, and confirm, and getting the calibration right is what separates a clean find from false readings.

Why find a stud at all
Drywall alone will not hold much weight. Screw a heavy mirror, shelf, TV mount, or cabinet into bare drywall and it eventually tears out, sometimes taking a chunk of wall with it. The studs — the vertical wood (or metal) framing members behind the drywall — are the solid anchor points. Driving your fastener into a stud gives it real holding strength. That is the entire reason for a stud finder: to locate that hidden framing so your anchor lands in wood, not air.

Types of stud finder
There are three broad kinds, and knowing which you have shapes how you use it.

Magnetic finders are simple and reliable but slower, since they only catch where a fastener actually sits. Electronic edge finders detect the edges of the stud by sensing the density change. Center-finding or stud-scan models use several sensors to read the whole stud and mark its center in one pass, and better ones add AC live-wire warnings and deep scanning. Step 1: Calibrate correctly
Calibration is where most stud-finder frustration begins, so get it right first. An electronic finder measures the wall relative to a baseline it sets the moment you press the button — so that baseline must be over hollow wall, not a stud.
- Choose a starting point over empty wall, roughly where you do not expect a stud. If you happen to start over a stud, the tool calibrates to it and then cannot detect it.
- Press the tool flat against the wall with even pressure — no tilting or rocking.
- Press and hold the button and keep the tool still until it signals it is ready, usually a beep or a light.
- Do not move until calibration finishes. Now you are ready to scan.
Recalibrate every time you lift the tool off the wall or start a new section. A fresh battery matters too — low power is a leading cause of erratic readings.
Step 2: Scan slowly and mark the edges
With the tool calibrated, find the stud:
- Slide the finder slowly sideways, keeping it flat against the wall. Moving too fast is the second big cause of missed studs.
- Watch and listen for the signal. An edge finder beeps or lights up as it reaches the edge of a stud. Mark that spot with a pencil.
- Continue past the stud until the signal stops, then reverse and find the far edge the same way, and mark it.
- The stud sits between your two marks. A standard stud is about 1.5 inches wide, so the center is midway between the edges. A center-finding model marks that center directly.
Always confirm with a second pass, ideally from the opposite direction, so you are not fooled by a fluke reading. Once confirmed, mark the center, since that is where you want your fastener.

Step 3: Confirm and use 16-inch spacing
Studs follow a predictable pattern, and using it both speeds up the search and double-checks your find. Studs are typically spaced 16 inches on center in most homes, sometimes 24 inches. So once you find one stud, measuring 16 inches along the wall points you straight at the next one. If your finder flags a stud but there is nothing at 16 or 32 inches from it, be suspicious — you may have hit a pipe or a wire instead.
To be certain before driving a long screw, you can confirm with a tiny finish nail or a thin drill bit in your marked center: it should bite into solid wood. Do this only where a mistaken hole will be hidden by whatever you are mounting.
Avoiding wires and pipes
Behind the drywall run electrical cables and plumbing, and drilling into them is dangerous and expensive. Protect yourself:
- Use the AC / live-wire mode if your finder has one — it warns of energized wiring so you can steer clear. Not every model includes it, so know your tool.
- Be extra cautious around outlets, switches, and fixtures. Wires and pipes run vertically and horizontally to these, so the area near them is high-risk.
- Do not assume a "stud" hit is wood. Basic finders sense density and cannot tell a stud from a metal pipe or conduit. A hit that ignores the 16-inch pattern deserves suspicion.
- Never drill deep near a known electrical or plumbing run, and turn off power to a circuit if you must work close to it.

Drywall vs plaster walls
The wall material changes how well a stud finder works. On modern drywall, electronic finders work well: the wall is a consistent thickness and the density change at a stud is clean and easy to read. Follow the calibrate-and-scan steps and you will get reliable results.
Plaster is another matter, especially older plaster over wood or metal lath. It is thick and uneven, and metal lath trips a metal-detecting sensor across the entire wall, drowning out the stud signal. On plaster, a strong magnet is often the most reliable approach — it catches the nails or screws holding the lath to the studs, and a vertical row of catches marks a stud. Deep-scan electronic finders and pinless models rated for thick walls can also help. If all else fails, fall back on measuring from known studs and probing with a fine nail.

Finding a stud without a stud finder
If you have no finder or it is fighting the wall, the wall itself gives away the studs:
- Measure from a corner. Studs run about 16 inches on center, so measure in 16-inch increments and check those spots.
- Look at outlets and switches. Electrical boxes are nailed to the side of a stud, so there is a stud right beside every one.
- Find trim and baseboard nails. These are driven into studs; a filled nail hole in the baseboard marks a stud above it.
- Knock and listen. Tap along the wall — over a stud the sound is duller and more solid; between studs it is hollow.
- Confirm with a magnet. Slide a strong magnet over the suspected spot; it will grab the drywall screws driven into the stud.
Combining two of these — say, measuring 16 inches from an outlet and confirming with a magnet — gets you a confident stud location with no electronic tool at all.
Tips for consistent results
- Fresh battery, every time. Weak power is behind most erratic electronic readings.
- Start over empty wall. Calibrating over a stud is the single most common mistake.
- Keep the tool flat and move slowly. Tilting or rushing breaks the reading.
- Confirm from both directions and mark the center, not just an edge.
- Respect textured walls and wallpaper, which can add noise; press firmly and scan slowly.
It also pays to think about where you actually need the stud versus where the tool found one. Studs are continuous vertical members, so once you have located and confirmed a stud at a comfortable working height, you can carry that vertical line up or down to the height you plan to mount at, rather than rescanning at head height for a mount going in near the floor. A small level or a plumb line dropped from your confirmed mark keeps you on the same stud. This matters most for tall installations like a TV mount or a wall cabinet, where the top and bottom fasteners must both land in the same framing. Confirming the stud once and then working vertically off that mark is faster and more reliable than scanning each fastener spot independently.
Bringing it together
Using a stud finder is a three-step rhythm: calibrate over hollow wall, slide slowly to mark both edges, and confirm with the 16-inch spacing and a second pass. Use the live-wire mode and stay clear of outlets and plumbing, know that plaster fights electronic finders, and remember the wall's own clues will find a stud even when the tool cannot.
