How we rank · full disclosure.
Most people should not buy their vinyl plank flooring online, and the honest version of this page says so up front. Rigid-core plank — the click-together SPC and WPC product that dominates American remodels — is freight. It is priced by the carton, shipped in boxes whose corners crush in parcel handling, and impossible to color-lot match across separately fulfilled shipments. You also cannot feel the embossing or judge the tone under your own light from a photograph, and vinyl is a printed product where those two things decide whether the finished floor looks like flooring or like a photograph of flooring.
So this page does two things. First, it gives you the specification vocabulary — wear layer in mil, core type, ASTM F3261, attached pad, subfloor flatness — so you can walk into a supplier and buy well. Second, it ranks the one vinyl format that genuinely makes sense as an online order: peel-and-stick vinyl tile and plank, for small rooms, rentals and repairs.
Wear Layer: The Only Durability Number That Counts
Vinyl plank is a sandwich, and the layer that determines how long it looks new is the clear film on top. It is measured in mil — one mil is 0.001 inch — and it is routinely confused with total plank thickness, which is a different and much less important figure.
| Wear layer | Grade | Appropriate for | Realistic appearance life |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mil | Light residential | Closets, guest bedrooms, short-term rentals | 5–10 years |
| 12 mil | Residential | Most of a family home | 15–20 years |
| 20 mil | Heavy residential / light commercial | Dogs, entryways, kitchens, caster chairs | 20–25 years |
| 28 mil+ | Commercial | Retail, rental turnover, extreme traffic | 25 years+ |
The practical consequence: a 5 mm plank with a 20 mil wear layer will look better in year fifteen than an 8 mm plank with a 6 mil wear layer. If a listing or a salesperson quotes only total thickness, that is usually because the wear layer is thin.

SPC vs WPC: Two Genuinely Different Floors
Both are rigid-core products, and both fall under ASTM F3261, Standard Specification for Resilient Flooring in Modular Format with Rigid Polymeric Core. That is the standard to ask about, because it is what separates engineered rigid-core plank from thin flexible glue-down vinyl sold under the same "LVP" umbrella.
| SPC (stone-plastic composite) | WPC (wood-plastic composite) | |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Limestone powder + PVC, solid and dense | Foamed PVC with wood flour, lower density |
| Typical thickness | 4–6 mm | 5.5–8 mm |
| Dent resistance | Better — denser core under the wear layer | Worse — foam compresses under point loads |
| Feel and sound | Harder, louder, colder underfoot | Softer, quieter, warmer |
| Telegraphing subfloor | More — thin and rigid, follows high spots | Less — extra thickness bridges minor variation |
| Heat and sun stability | Better; the usual choice over radiant heat | More movement with temperature swing |
Choose SPC if you have heavy furniture, a slab subfloor, radiant heat or a sun-flooded room. Choose WPC if the room is upstairs, if footfall noise matters, or if you simply want a floor that is pleasant to stand on for an hour. Neither is "better" and any salesperson who says one is, is selling what is in stock.
The Complaint Nobody Warns You About: Denting and Telegraphing
Vinyl plank's reputation is built on being waterproof, and it earns that. What owners are genuinely surprised by is the two things it does worse than laminate.
It dents. Vinyl is a soft polymer. Refrigerator feet, a dropped socket, a stiletto heel, an office chair caster and the legs of a heavy dining table all leave marks that laminate's hard aluminum-oxide-over-fiberboard surface would shrug off. Use wide furniture pads rather than small felt dots, put a mat under a caster chair, and lay plywood down before you walk an appliance across a new floor.
It telegraphs the subfloor. Because rigid-core plank is thin, every high spot and every ridge of dried joint compound eventually shows — first as a shiny wear point where the floor takes all the traffic, then sometimes as a cracked plank. Manufacturers usually specify flatness within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet, which is tighter than a typical framed floor arrives at. Checking with a straightedge and fixing high and low spots is the least glamorous and most consequential hour of the whole project.

Where an Online Order Genuinely Makes Sense
Peel-and-stick vinyl is the exception to everything above. It is light, it ships flat and undamaged, it costs less than the freight on a pallet, and it is the correct product for four specific situations: a small utility room or entry, a rental you cannot permanently alter, a repair patch, and a floor you intend to replace within a few years. It is not a substitute for rigid-core plank in a living room — the seams are the weak point, and a large area means a great deal of seam.
Three rules decide whether a peel-and-stick floor lasts three years or three months. The substrate must be clean, dry and dust-free — vacuum, then wipe, then let it dry fully, because adhesive bonds to dust rather than to the floor if you rush it. It must be flat, since a peel-and-stick tile has no rigidity to bridge anything. And it should not be laid against a heat register or in front of a wood stove, because warmth softens the adhesive and the edges creep.
The Ranked Field

Best for a laundry room, entry, small kitchen or rental where you cannot install a floating floor
- 36 planks covering about 54 sq ft per box
- Self-adhesive backing — no underlayment, no click joint, no transition height
- Cuts with a utility knife and a straightedge
- Rigid enough to sit flat rather than telegraphing every seam
Why buy it: this is the one format in the vinyl category that genuinely belongs in an online order: it is light, it ships without freight damage, and for a 40-square-foot room the total cost is less than the delivery charge on a pallet of rigid-core plank.

Best for small patches, closets, utility areas and matching an existing Nexus floor
- 12 x 12 inch tiles, 20 per box — roughly 20 sq ft
- Plank-look print on a square tile format
- Sold continuously for years, so re-ordering to match is realistic
- Thin profile, so no door undercutting
Why buy it: the ownership record here is the largest in the whole peel-and-stick category by a wide margin, which means the failure modes — edge lift in humidity, adhesive softening near a heat register — are documented rather than guessed at.

Best for a bathroom or laundry floor where the surface needs to shrug off standing water
- 36 planks, about 54 sq ft, wood-look print
- Vinyl through its thickness so the plank itself is waterproof
- Textured surface rather than a flat gloss print
- Trims with a knife for pipe and toilet flange cuts
Why buy it: the highest owner rating in this field, though on a much shorter record than the Nexus and Art3d products — a strong signal, not yet a proven one.

Best for rooms where a flat printed gloss would read as obviously fake
- 54 sq ft per box, wood-grain embossed surface
- Heat-resistant backing for rooms with underfloor warmth
- Self-adhesive with a firm bond on clean substrate
- Trims with a utility knife
Why buy it: surface texture is what separates peel-and-stick that passes a glance from peel-and-stick that does not, and an embossed grain also hides scuffing far better than a smooth print.

Best for a large area on a small budget, or a temporary floor you expect to replace
- 54 sq ft per box at the low end of the category price range
- Self-adhesive laminate-look vinyl planks
- Thin gauge keeps door clearances intact
- Straightforward knife cutting
Why buy it: the honest budget option, with the honest budget caveat — thinner gauge means it follows subfloor imperfections more faithfully, so surface prep matters more here than with the thicker boxes above.

Best for a rental where the floor has to come back up, or an awkward narrow space
- Continuous roll rather than individual planks — fewer seams
- 11.8 inches wide, 590 inches long, roughly 49 sq ft
- Cuts to length with a knife
- Soft wood-look finish suited to low-traffic rooms
Why buy it: a roll has a fraction of the seam length of 36 individual planks, and seams are where peel-and-stick lifts first, so for a hallway or a narrow galley kitchen the roll format is structurally the better idea.

Buying Rigid-Core Plank Properly
When you go to a supplier for the real thing, take this list:
- Wear layer in mil, not just plank thickness. 12 mil minimum for a home, 20 mil with pets.
- Core type — SPC or WPC — and confirm it meets ASTM F3261.
- Attached pad, yes or no. If yes, do not add a second underlayment; if no, ask what underlayment the warranty requires.
- Color-lot number on every carton, and whether they can pull more from the same run in two weeks when you come up short. You will come up short.
- A physical sample to live with under your own lighting for a few days.
- Waterproof warranty terms in writing — specifically how long surface water is covered and whether water from below or a flood is excluded. It usually is.
- Order 10 percent overage — 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone layouts.
How We Rank
We do not buy, install or physically handle flooring. The peel-and-stick rankings above come from aggregated owner ratings, weighted toward reviews written months after installation where edge lift and adhesive failure appear, and cross-checked against listed coverage and construction. Specification guidance is drawn from published standards — ASTM F3261 for rigid-core resilient flooring — and from manufacturer care and warranty documentation, cited in text. We deliberately do not rank rigid-core click plank, because the honest advice for that part of the market is to buy where you can hold a sample and confirm a color-lot. Prices were checked at the time of writing. Full method: how we rank.
The Verdict
Spec on wear layer first, core second, and total thickness last. Twelve mil for a normal home, 20 mil if there are dogs or casters; SPC over slabs, radiant heat and sunlight, WPC upstairs and anywhere comfort matters. Buy the rigid-core plank in person. Order peel-and-stick online for the small rooms and the rentals where it is genuinely the right answer — the Art3d 54 sq ft box is the sensible default and the Nexus tiles have the deepest ownership record in the format.
