Why overwatering harms plants

The damage is not really about too much water; it is about too little air. Healthy soil holds pockets of air between its particles, and roots draw the oxygen they need from those pockets. When soil stays saturated, water fills the air spaces and the roots effectively suffocate.

Deprived of oxygen, roots stop taking up water and nutrients, then begin to rot. Waterlogged, airless soil is also the ideal environment for the fungi and bacteria that cause root rot, which spreads through the root system and, if unchecked, kills the plant. How to check properly

Diagnosing overwatering takes two minutes and prevents a fatal mistake. Do not rely on the surface alone.

  1. Feel the soil deeper. Push a finger 1 to 2 inches in. The surface can look dry while the root zone stays soggy.
  2. Lift the pot. A waterlogged pot is noticeably heavy; a dry one is light.
  3. Smell it. A sour, musty, or rotten-egg odor signals anaerobic, waterlogged soil and possible root rot.
  4. Check for drainage. Confirm the pot has working drainage holes and is not sitting in a saucer of standing water.
  5. Inspect the roots if symptoms are serious: slide the plant out and look. Healthy roots are firm and white or tan; rotting roots are brown, black, and mushy.

How to save an overwatered plant

Caught early, many overwatered plants recover. Act as soon as you diagnose it.

  1. Stop watering and let the soil dry out before adding any more.
  2. Move to good light and airflow, which speeds drying and helps the plant recover — avoid harsh direct sun on an already-stressed plant.
  3. Improve drainage. Empty any saucer of standing water; make sure drainage holes are clear.
  4. For root rot, unpot and trim. Cut away all mushy brown or black roots down to firm, white tissue with clean scissors.
  5. Repot in fresh, well-draining mix if you removed rotten roots, and water only lightly until new growth shows the plant has recovered.
