What you actually pay

Shark undercuts iRobot at every step of the ladder, and it does it while including more hardware. A Shark AI robot with a self-emptying base sits at $300 to $400. A Roomba j7 with no dock at all is $400 to $550. The Shark PowerDetect flagship at $500 to $650 is still cheaper than iRobot's self-emptying flagship, and it adds floor-type detection on top.

What iRobot's premium buys is the camera and the software behind it — object recognition trained on the things people leave on floors — plus a service and parts network no competitor matches. Whether that is worth $150 or more depends entirely on how tidy the floors are before the robot starts.

Running costs are close and neither brand is expensive to keep. Filters go two or three times a year, side brushes about as often, and a main brushroll roughly annually. Any self-emptying dock consumes bags — Shark and iRobot both sell them and third-party equivalents exist for both — which over ten years adds up to more than most buyers expect. Budget $50 to $100 a year in parts either way.

The long-term item is the battery. Both brands sell replacements, both are swappable with a screwdriver, and on a cheap robot the battery costs a meaningful fraction of the machine.
