Step 1: Remove the grille cover

Most bathroom fan grilles are held by two spring clips, not screws. Grip the cover and pull it straight down a couple of inches. You will feel and see two metal V-shaped or wire clips; pinch each clip together and it releases from its slot in the housing. The cover comes free in your hand. A few older or higher-end units use screws instead; if you see screws, remove those. Do not yank hard on a clipped cover; it releases with a gentle squeeze once you see the clips.

Step 4: Reassemble and test

  3. Restore power at the breaker.

Many bathrooms have a combination unit that pairs the exhaust fan with a light, a heat lamp, or a heater. The cleaning method is the same, with a couple of additions. With the breaker off, remove the light bulbs or heat lamps before dropping the grille so you do not bump and break them, and set them aside. Clean the lens or diffuser separately in warm soapy water like the grille. Around a heater element, use only a dry brush and vacuum, never anything damp, and never bend or press on the heating coils. Reinstall bulbs only after everything is dry and the grille is back in place. From outside, locate the vent cap and check that the flap moves freely and is not clogged; clear any debris. Inside, if you can reach the duct, check that it is not crushed, disconnected, or sagging with trapped condensation.
