How we rank · full disclosure.
Most mattress toppers last three to five years. Material sets the range: natural latex runs 5 to 8 years, dense memory foam 3 to 5, wool 3 to 5, down and feather 1 to 3, and cheap convoluted egg-crate foam often fails inside 18 months. Weight and use compress that further — a topper under two adults ages roughly twice as fast as one in a guest room. The reliable test is not the calendar: if the topper holds a permanent dip of more than about an inch with nothing on it, it is finished.
How long does each material last?
Toppers fail by compression set, meaning the cell structure collapses and stops rebounding. Denser materials resist that longer, which is why density predicts life better than price does.
| Material | Typical life | What to look for | Typical queen price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) | 5–8 years | Natural, not blended latex | $180–$450 |
| Memory foam, 4 lb density or higher | 4–5 years | Density stated in lb per cubic foot | $120–$300 |
| Memory foam, 3 lb density | 2–3 years | Common in budget listings | $60–$120 |
| Wool | 3–5 years | Needs airing, not washing | $150–$400 |
| Down and feather | 1–3 years | Fill power and baffle box construction | $80–$250 |
| Polyester fiberfill | 1–2 years | Flattens fastest of all | $30–$70 |
| Convoluted egg-crate foam | Under 2 years | Peaks crush and do not recover | $25–$60 |
The density number is the one worth hunting for on a memory foam listing. A 3 lb per cubic foot topper and a 5 lb topper can look and feel similar in the first month and behave completely differently in year two. Sellers who do not publish density usually have a reason.

What are the signs a topper is finished?
Four, and they arrive in a fairly predictable order. First, the topper stops rebounding overnight — the shape you left is still there in the evening. Second, a visible dip forms where you sleep while the edges stay full; measure it with a straightedge across the topper and a ruler, and anything over about an inch is failure, not settling. Third, the pain the topper was solving comes back, because a collapsed comfort layer transfers you straight onto the mattress underneath. Fourth, on foam, crumbling or a persistent stale odor that airing does not clear, which means the cell structure has broken down.
Flattening from short-term compression is a different, fixable thing — that is covered in how to fluff a flattened mattress topper.

How do you make one last longer?
- Rotate 180 degrees every three months. Cheapest single thing you can do, and it directly targets the body impression.
- Fit a washable protector over it. Sweat and oils degrade foam and void stain-excluded warranties.
- Give it air. Strip the bed once a fortnight and let the topper breathe for a few hours; trapped moisture accelerates foam breakdown.
- Support it properly. A topper on a sagging mattress copies the sag and sets into it permanently. Fix the base first.
- Do not fold or compress it for storage. Foam stored folded holds the crease.

Should you replace the topper or the mattress?
Check the mattress with the topper removed. If the bare mattress is level and supportive and only the comfort feel is wrong, a new topper is the cheap correct answer. If the bare mattress shows its own dip or you can feel the coils, a topper will mask that for a few months and then telegraph it back through — that is a mattress problem, and how often to replace a mattress covers the thresholds.
When you do replace the topper, thickness and density decide how it feels — see how thick a topper should be and memory foam versus latex. Our mattress topper picks weight owner reports of how the topper felt after a year, which is the only durability evidence that matters.
