To lower soil pH (make it more acidic), add elemental sulfur, applying it well in advance — ideally the fall before planting — so soil bacteria have time to convert it into acid. The amount depends on soil type and how far you need to drop the pH: roughly 1 to 2 pounds of elemental sulfur per 100 square feet lowers pH about one point in sandy soil, more in clay. Test first, apply conservatively, and re-test, because over-acidifying is difficult to reverse.
Lowering pH matters most for acid-loving plants like blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons, which cannot take up iron in alkaline soil and yellow badly without it. Test before you acidify
As with raising pH, start with a test rather than a product. You need to know your current pH and your target before deciding how much sulfur to add.
- A home kit or meter gives a fast reading; see how to test soil pH.
- A lab test gives a specific amendment recommendation and reports organic matter and texture, both of which affect how much sulfur you need.
- Know your target. Blueberries want pH 4.5 to 5.5; azaleas and rhododendrons 4.5 to 6.0; most vegetables are happy at 6.0 to 7.0 and rarely need acidifying.
Only lower pH if a test shows you need to. Many gardeners acidify unnecessarily; if your soil is already at 6.5 and you are growing vegetables, leave it alone.

How much sulfur to use
Elemental sulfur is the standard, safest amendment for lowering pH. The amount depends on how far you are moving the pH and your soil texture.

Lowering pH by more than a point is a big change; do it in stages across seasons with re-testing between. Because over-acidified soil is hard and slow to correct, err on the low side and add more later if needed.
Choosing the right acidifier
There are three common ways to lower pH, differing in speed and safety.

For most gardeners, elemental sulfur is the best choice despite being slow, because it is safe and durable. Reserve aluminum sulfate for situations needing a quick change (like bluing hydrangeas), and use it sparingly to avoid aluminum accumulation. How to apply sulfur
Sulfur depends on soil bacteria and warmth, so both timing and incorporation matter.
- Apply in fall or several months ahead of when you need the lower pH, since conversion is slow.
- Work it into the top 6 inches of soil where you can; sulfur moves through soil slowly, so incorporating it speeds the reaction. For established plantings, apply to the surface and water in.
- Apply to warm, moist soil when possible — the bacteria that convert sulfur are most active above about 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Split large amounts into applications over seasons rather than one heavy dose, and re-test between.
- Water in to support the microbial activity that does the work.

Maintaining acidic soil for acid-lovers
Lowering pH once is rarely permanent, especially if your native soil and water are alkaline; soil tends to drift back toward its natural pH over time. Acid-loving plants need ongoing maintenance.
- Mulch with acidic organic matter — pine needles, pine bark, or oak leaves — which gently maintains acidity as it breaks down.
- Use an acidifying fertilizer formulated for acid-lovers (holly-tone-type or ammonium-based) during the growing season.
- Re-test annually and top up sulfur as the pH creeps back up.
- Watch your irrigation water. Hard, alkaline tap water gradually raises pH; collected rainwater is naturally slightly acidic and better for acid-lovers where feasible.

Why lowering pH helps acid-lovers
The reason acid-loving plants yellow in alkaline soil is iron. At high pH, iron and manganese become chemically unavailable, so even iron-rich soil starves these plants, producing the classic yellow leaves with green veins called iron chlorosis. Lowering pH into their preferred range makes iron available again and the plants green up.

Common mistakes to avoid
Acidifying soil goes wrong in a few predictable ways.
- Not testing first. Acidifying unnecessarily or overshooting is common and hard to reverse.
- Expecting fast results from sulfur. It is slow; apply months ahead.
- Relying on coffee grounds. Used grounds are near neutral and barely affect pH.
- Overusing aluminum sulfate. Repeated use can build aluminum to harmful levels; use it sparingly.
- Ignoring alkaline irrigation water, which slowly pushes pH back up and undoes your work.
