Building a floating shelf is a beginner-to-intermediate DIY project that takes an afternoon and costs roughly $20 to $60 in lumber and hardware. This is the strongest simple approach. A solid cleat screws to the studs, and the shelf, hollowed to fit, slides over it and pins in place.

  1. Find and mark the studs. Run a stud finder across the wall and confirm each edge with a small finish nail. Mark stud centers with a pencil. Standard framing is 16 inches on center, so a 32-inch shelf typically spans three studs.
  2. Cut the cleat. Rip a piece of 2x3 or 2x4 to a depth about 1 inch less than your finished shelf depth. Its length should reach across at least two studs. This cleat carries all the weight.
  3. Level and fasten the cleat. Hold the cleat to the wall, check it with a 2-foot level, and drive two 3 to 3.5-inch structural or lag screws into each stud, one high and one low. Predrill to avoid splitting. This is the connection that determines your load limit.
  4. Build the shelf box. Make a hollow shelf from 3/4-inch plywood or a solid board hollowed on the back to slip over the cleat with about 1/16 inch of clearance. A snug fit keeps the front edge from drooping.
  5. Slide it on and pin it. Push the shelf fully onto the cleat. Drive two or three finish screws or brad nails up through the bottom of the shelf into the cleat, or down through the top, so it cannot be lifted off.
  6. Fill, sand and finish. Fill nail holes, sand to 150-grit, and paint or stain. Let finish cure before loading.
  7. Load gradually and watch the front edge. Add weight and sight along the front. Any visible sag means the span or the board is undersized, not that you did the mounting wrong.
