The short answer, as of 2026: a standard 1,500-watt electric fireplace on full heat costs about 26 cents an hour at the US average residential rate of roughly 17.5 cents per kWh (EIA) — $1.05 for a four-hour evening, about $32 a month used that way, and roughly $126 across a four-month winter. On the low heat setting, usually 750 watts, halve it. With the flames on and the heater off, it costs under a cent an hour. In California at 32 cents per kWh the same four-hour evening costs $1.92.

The formula behind every cell: watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × rate per kWh. A 1,500-watt unit uses 1.5 kWh per hour of full-output running, and 5,000 BTU per hour of heat is what that delivers — enough for roughly 400 to 500 sq ft of well-insulated space.

Electric is the most expensive per unit of delivered heat in most of the country. Its advantage is elsewhere: no venting, no chimney, no combustion products, no permit for a plug-in unit, no annual service, and installation measured in minutes rather than thousands of dollars. That combination is why the sensible use case is supplementing rather than replacing central heat.

Where it genuinely saves money

Zone heating is the real argument. Every 1°F you set a whole-house thermostat back over an 8-hour period saves roughly 1 percent of heating energy, according to long-standing US Department of Energy guidance. In a large or poorly zoned home, running 1,500 watts in the living room while dropping the house thermostat 6 to 8°F usually comes out ahead, sometimes substantially.

It stops working when you run several units at once. Three 1,500-watt fireplaces on top of a furnace that is still cycling is how people arrive at a $400 January bill. The arithmetic only favors electric zone heat when the central system genuinely runs less.

Safety. Plug a 1,500-watt unit directly into a wall receptacle, never into an extension cord or power strip. Keep the recommended clearance from furniture and curtains, and never mount a unit above a heat-producing appliance or a working fireplace. Is an electric fireplace cheaper to run than central heating?

Only when it lets you turn the central system down. Electric resistance heat is the most expensive form of heat per unit delivered in most of the US, because one unit of electricity can only ever become one unit of heat. Natural gas delivers the same heat for roughly a third of the price and a heat pump for a quarter to a third. The genuine saving comes from zone heating: warming the one room you occupy on 1,500 watts while setting the whole-house thermostat back 6 to 8°F.

Do the flames use much electricity?

Almost none. The LED flame effect draws roughly 10 to 30 watts, which is about 0.2 to 0.6 cents an hour at the US average rate, or under $5 for a whole winter of evening use. That is the reason so many owners run flame-only in mild weather. All the cost is in the heating element, and switching the heat off while leaving the flames on drops the running cost by around 98 percent.

Are the more expensive electric fireplaces cheaper to run?

No. Every plug-in electric heater converts essentially 100 percent of the electricity it draws into heat, so two 1,500-watt units produce identical heat at identical cost regardless of price or brand. What extra money buys is the realism of the flame effect, build quality, better thermostats and quieter fans. Any claim that one electric fireplace is more energy efficient than another at the same wattage is marketing rather than physics.

Can I run one on a regular outlet?

A standard 1,500-watt plug-in unit draws 12.5 amps at 120 volts, which is at or slightly over the continuous-load limit for a 15-amp circuit under the National Electrical Code 80 percent rule. Plug it directly into a wall receptacle — never a power strip, extension cord or surge protector — and do not share the circuit with another heater or a large appliance. Larger hardwired 240-volt units require a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician, and permit requirements are jurisdiction-specific.

How much does it cost compared with a gas fireplace?

A gas fireplace delivering the same heat typically costs 40 to 70 percent less to run in most of the country, because natural gas is cheaper per unit of energy than electricity almost everywhere in the US. The counterweights are installation, which for a vented gas unit commonly runs $3,000 to $6,000 against a few hundred dollars for a plug-in electric, and the ongoing servicing and venting requirements gas brings.
