No — a typical houseplant grow light costs about $1.85 to $7.50 a month to run. A 30 watt LED bar on for 12 hours a day uses 0.36 kilowatt-hours daily, or about 11 kWh a month, which at the US average residential price of roughly 17 cents per kWh reported by the Energy Information Administration as of 2026 comes to $1.85. A 100 watt panel on the same schedule costs about $6.10 a month. Rates vary widely by state, from around 11 cents in parts of the Midwest and South to over 40 cents in Hawaii, so run the numbers on your own bill.

How do you work out your own cost?

One line of arithmetic. Multiply the actual wattage by hours per day, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours, multiply by 30 for a month, then multiply by your rate per kWh from your utility bill.

So a 45 watt fixture at 14 hours a day: 45 × 14 ÷ 1,000 = 0.63 kWh per day, × 30 = 18.9 kWh per month, × $0.17 = $3.21 a month. The only place people go wrong is the wattage, because the number printed largest on the box is frequently an equivalence claim rather than the power the fixture actually draws.

For comparison, a US household uses roughly 900 kWh a month on average according to EIA residential electricity data, so a 30 watt plant light is around one percent of that — well below a refrigerator, a clothes dryer or a second freezer.

Why does my grow light say 1,000 W when it draws 100 W?

Because the large number is an equivalence claim rather than a measurement. Sellers compare the light output to what an old high-pressure sodium or metal halide fixture of that wattage would have produced, and the comparison is generous. The figure that matters is the actual power draw, which appears in the specifications as actual wattage, power consumption or input watts, and it is often a tenth of the headline. If you cannot find it, a plug-in energy monitor settles the question for a few dollars.

Is it cheaper to run one big light or several small ones?

Usually one properly sized fixture, because larger LED drivers tend to be a little more efficient and you avoid duplicated standby losses. But the difference is small, and coverage matters more than efficiency. Light intensity falls off sharply with distance, so one bright fixture too far away can deliver less usable light to your plants than two modest ones placed close. Fit the light to the shelf, then worry about watts.

Do grow lights raise your heating or cooling bill?

Barely, at houseplant scale. Essentially all the electricity a light consumes ends up as heat in the room, so a 30 watt fixture is a 30 watt heater — about the same as a laptop charger. In winter that heat offsets a fraction of your heating. In summer an air conditioner has to remove it, which adds roughly a third again to the cost of running the light. Neither is significant below about 100 watts of lighting.

Does running lights at night save money?

Only if your utility bills on a time-of-use plan, which many US utilities now offer. Where off-peak overnight rates apply, shifting a grow light schedule to those hours can cut the cost meaningfully, and plants do not care what time their day happens as long as the photoperiod is consistent. Check your bill for peak and off-peak rates before rearranging anything, because on a flat-rate plan the timing makes no difference at all.

Are LED grow lights genuinely cheaper to run than fluorescent?

Yes, typically by 30 to 50 percent for the same usable light, and they last several times longer. The US Department of Energy has documented the same efficiency gap across general lighting, and horticultural fixtures follow the pattern. A T5 fluorescent shelf light that draws 54 watts is commonly replaced by an LED bar drawing 25 to 35 watts with similar output, and the LED holds its brightness far longer before needing replacement.
