The short answer: propagate an African violet from a single healthy leaf. Cut a medium-aged leaf from the middle of the plant, trim its stem (the petiole) to about 1 to 1.5 inches at a 45-degree angle, then root it in water or, better, in a light, moist potting mix under a humidity dome. Choosing the Right African Violet Leaf

The leaf you start with largely determines your success, so choose deliberately. The best candidate is a firm, healthy, medium-aged leaf from the middle row of the plant — not the oldest outer leaves, which are past their prime and root poorly, and not the soft young leaves at the center, which are too immature.

Look for a leaf with no blemishes, no signs of pests, and good color and firmness. A single vigorous leaf can produce a cluster of plantlets, so one well-chosen leaf goes a long way. If you are propagating from a plant you love, take two or three leaves to improve your odds and multiply the results, but always leave the parent with plenty of foliage to recover.

Making the cut

How you cut the petiole matters more than it might seem. Use a clean, sharp blade — a razor blade or sharp scissors wiped with rubbing alcohol — and cut the leaf stem at a 45-degree angle, leaving about 1 to 1.5 inches of petiole attached to the leaf.

The angled cut exposes more surface area, which is where roots and, later, plantlets emerge, so it improves both rooting speed and the number of plantlets. Keeping the petiole short, around an inch, encourages plantlets to form closer to the surface where they can break through easily; too long a petiole buries the growth point deep and delays or reduces plantlets. Make one clean cut rather than sawing, since a crushed or ragged stem invites rot.

Method 1: rooting in water

Water propagation is the easy, visible way to start, ideal if you like to watch the roots develop before committing to soil.

  1. Suspend the leaf over water. Use a small jar, and rest the leaf across the top with only the petiole dipping into the water. Foil or plastic wrap with a small hole poked in it holds the leaf in place. The leaf blade must stay dry and above the water, or it rots.
  2. Submerge only the petiole. Just the cut stem should be in the water, about half an inch deep.
  3. Place in bright, indirect light at 65 to 75 degrees F.
  4. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh and oxygenated.
  5. Wait for roots, then pot up. Roots appear in 3 to 4 weeks. Once they are an inch long, move the leaf to soil, where plantlets will eventually form.

Method 2: rooting in soil

Starting directly in soil skips the water-to-soil transition and generally gives faster, stronger plantlets. It is the method most experienced African violet growers prefer.

  2. Optionally dip the petiole in rooting hormone. Not essential, but it speeds rooting in soil.
  3. Insert the petiole at an angle. Poke a hole and set the stem in so the base of the leaf blade rests just above the soil surface, angled slightly so plantlets have room to emerge.
  4. Firm and moisten. Press the mix around the petiole and water lightly so it is moist but not soggy.
  5. Cover with a humidity dome. A clear bag or dome over the pot keeps humidity high while roots form. Vent it occasionally for airflow.

Humidity, light, and temperature

African violet cuttings root best in warm, humid, brightly lit conditions. Keep them in bright, indirect light — an east window, or a few feet from a brighter window — but never in direct sun, which scorches the tender leaf. Temperature should sit around 65 to 75 degrees F. Cooler than that and rooting slows dramatically. Separating and Potting African Violet Plantlets

This is the stage that requires patience. After the leaf roots, small clusters of new leaves — the plantlets — emerge from the base of the petiole at the soil line, usually 2 to 3 months in. A single leaf often produces several. Let them grow until each has two or three of its own leaves and is large enough to handle, about a quarter to a third the size of a mature small plant.

Then gently unpot the whole cluster, separate the plantlets by teasing apart their roots, and pot each one individually in a small pot of violet mix. The original mother leaf can sometimes be replanted to produce a second flush of plantlets, though it eventually spends itself. Keep the new plants humid and shaded for a week or two as they settle, then move them into normal African violet care.
