Replacing a ceiling light is a genuine beginner DIY job — plan on 30 to 45 minutes, about $30 to $200 for the fixture, and no permit for a like-for-like swap. You reuse the existing wiring and connect three wires: hot to hot, neutral to neutral, ground to ground. The one rule you never bend is power: switch off the breaker and verify the wires are dead with a tester before touching them, because a wall switch alone can leave the fixture live. Call a licensed electrician if there is no ground, the box is loose, you see brittle cloth-insulated wiring, or you are adding a fixture where none exists.

Tools and materials
You need almost nothing beyond a screwdriver and a way to prove the power is off.
- Non-contact voltage tester — the single most important tool here. Touch it to each wire after killing the breaker; a light or beep means live.
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat), wire strippers, and a stepladder.
- Wire nuts — most fixtures include them, but a fresh assortment is cheap insurance against a reused, stretched-out nut.

- A helper or a hook to hold the fixture while you wire it — a length of coat-hanger wire off the box saves your arms.

Step 1: Kill the power and prove it dead
Switch off the breaker feeding the light — not just the wall switch. Flip the wall switch on so you will know the moment the circuit is truly dead. At the fixture, once it is opened, hold a non-contact voltage tester against each conductor. No light, no beep, on any wire, before your fingers go near bare copper. If the tester lights on a wire you thought was dead, stop and find the right breaker.
Step 2: Lower the old fixture and note the wiring
Remove the shade or globe, then the two mounting screws or the center nut holding the canopy to the box. Ease the fixture down — it will hang by its wires. Take a phone photo of the connections before you undo anything: which color goes to which, and whether the ground lands on a green screw or a bare pigtail. Unscrew the wire nuts, untwist the conductors, and set the old fixture aside.

Step 3: Fit the new mounting bracket
Almost every fixture comes with its own mounting strap (crossbar) that screws to the two threaded ears on the box. Fit the new strap now, and thread the fixture's center stud or the green ground screw into it. Confirm the box itself is solid — give it a firm push. A box that flexes or is only nailed to drywall must be secured to framing first; a fixture over 50 pounds or any fan needs a fan-rated box.
Step 4: Make the connections
Strip each conductor to a clean three-quarter inch if the ends look nicked. Connect black (fixture) to black (ceiling), white to white, and the ground — bare copper or green — to the ceiling ground and the metal strap. Hold the two conductors parallel, twist them together clockwise with pliers, then thread a wire nut on clockwise until it is snug and will not spin. Tug each wire: a proper connection does not pull apart. Tuck the connections gently up into the box, folding the wires accordion-style so nothing is pinched.

Step 5: Mount, restore power, and test
Raise the canopy to the ceiling and secure it with the mounting screws or center nut — snug against the ceiling, not cranked so hard it dents the canopy. Install bulbs within the fixture's stated wattage limit (over-lamping cooks the socket and the wiring). Restore the breaker, flip the switch, and confirm steady, flicker-free light. Watch it for a minute; a good connection lights instantly and stays even.
Common mistakes that cause trouble
- Trusting the wall switch instead of the breaker. The most dangerous shortcut. Always verify dead with a tester.
- Loose wire nuts. The number-one cause of flicker and of hot connections. Twist firmly; tug to confirm.
- Skipping the ground. That bare copper is the safety path. Land it on the green screw or ground wire every time.
- Over-lamping. A 100-watt bulb in a 60-watt fixture overheats the socket. Respect the label.
- Hanging heavy off a light box. Over 50 pounds or a fan needs a fan-rated, braced box.
When to call a licensed electrician
Stop and call a pro if there is no ground wire in the box and you want one, if you find cloth-insulated or aluminum wiring, if the box is buried or unreachable, or if the wiring in the box does not match any pattern you recognize. Adding a brand-new fixture, moving a box, or anything at the main panel is licensed-electrician and permit work — jurisdiction-specific, and never a DIY panel job. A straightforward swap on sound wiring, though, is well within reach.
