Yes, in most air fryers, as long as the foil goes inside the perforated cooking basket, is held down by food, and does not cover the holes in the basket floor. Never line the drawer underneath the basket, never let foil touch the heating element, and never preheat with a loose sheet in an empty basket — the fan will lift it. Skip foil entirely for acidic or heavily salted foods, which react with aluminum. Check your own manual: a minority of models, particularly those with an exposed bottom element, forbid foil outright.
Where exactly should the foil go?
Inside the basket, under the food, and nowhere else. An air fryer is a small convection oven: a fan drives hot air down past a heating element and through the perforated basket so it reaches every surface of the food. Foil laid inside the basket with food sitting on top stays put and interferes with only the base of that airflow. Foil laid in the drawer beneath the basket, wrapped around the basket exterior, or draped over the heating coil interferes with the whole system. Leave a clear margin of at least an inch around the foil so air can pass around the edges.

What happens if foil blocks the basket perforations?
The appliance runs hotter than it should and your food cooks worse. Those holes are the return path for circulating air; sealing them turns a convection oven into a covered pan. Which foods should never sit on foil?
Anything acidic or heavily salted. Is parchment paper a better option?

The catch is the temperature rating — many parchment papers top out around 420°F to 450°F, so read the box before a 400°F cook and never let the paper touch the element.
