A drip coffee maker typically lasts about five years of daily use, a single-serve pod machine three to five, and a well-maintained espresso machine ten or more. The dominant variable is not brand but limescale. Minerals deposit inside the heating tube on every brew cycle, slowly restricting flow and dropping brew temperature until the pump or thermostat fails. Descaling every one to three months is the single change that reliably adds years. Complexity drives failure. Why is limescale the thing that kills coffee makers?

Because it attacks the one component that has to work perfectly. Water is heated in a narrow aluminum tube, and every heating cycle drives calcium and magnesium out of solution onto the tube wall. The deposit insulates the element from the water, so the element runs hotter to deliver the same brew temperature, and it narrows the passage, so flow slows and the thermostat cycles more often. Eventually one of three things happens: the tube blocks, the thermostat fails from constant cycling, or the pump on a pressurized machine burns out pushing against the restriction.

The tell is brew temperature. The Specialty Coffee Association specifies 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit at the coffee bed; a scaled machine drifts below that long before it stops working, which is why coffee tastes flat and sour for months before the appliance actually dies. If your morning pot has gradually gone weak and lukewarm, that is a maintenance problem, not an age problem.

Descale on a schedule rather than when something goes wrong: monthly in hard water, every two to three months in soft. Use filtered water in the reservoir, which slows deposit formation more than any other habit. Empty and dry the reservoir rather than leaving standing water, which prevents both mineral concentration and biofilm. Wash the carafe and basket daily, because coffee oils go rancid and taint every subsequent pot.
