What does a pot of coffee actually cost to make?

Energy is watts multiplied by time, and brewing is short. Why is the warming plate the expensive part?

Because it runs for hours while the brew runs for minutes. A 75-watt hot plate left on for two hours uses about 0.15 kilowatt-hours, roughly matching the energy of the brew that filled the carafe. Can it overload your kitchen circuit?

Possibly, in the morning rush. At 120 volts a 1,200-watt coffee maker pulls about 10 amps, and a standard kitchen small-appliance circuit is rated 15 or 20 amps. Add a 1,200-watt toaster or a 1,500-watt kettle on the same circuit and you are over the limit. The breaker trips because the circuit is loaded, not because the coffee maker is faulty.
