What wattage should you expect by machine type?
Wattage tracks how fast the machine has to heat water. A drip machine heats a carafe gradually and can afford a smaller element; a pod machine heats 8 ounces almost instantly and needs a larger one. Espresso machines sit high because they hold a boiler or thermoblock at temperature.

What does a pot of coffee actually cost to make?
Energy is watts multiplied by time, and brewing is short. A 1,000-watt drip machine running ten minutes consumes about 0.17 kilowatt-hours; at the roughly 17 cents per kWh reported in the US Energy Information Administration's published average retail price of electricity to residential customers for 2024, that is about 2.8 cents per pot. Brew one pot a day for a year and the electricity comes to around ten dollars. The coffee itself costs far more than the power used to make it. Your own rate matters more than the machine — residential prices range from under 12 cents to over 30 cents per kWh depending on the state, so read your bill and substitute that figure.

Why is the warming plate the expensive part?
Because it runs for hours while the brew runs for minutes. A 75-watt hot plate left on for two hours uses about 0.15 kilowatt-hours, roughly matching the energy of the brew that filled the carafe. Over a year of daily use that is on the order of another eight to ten dollars, and it does the coffee no favors — sustained contact heat drives off aromatics and pushes the brew toward bitterness within about 20 to 30 minutes. A thermal carafe sidesteps the whole issue by drawing zero watts once brewing stops, which is the single most useful energy feature on a drip machine.

Can it overload your kitchen circuit?
Possibly, in the morning rush. At 120 volts a 1,200-watt coffee maker pulls about 10 amps, and a standard kitchen small-appliance circuit is rated 15 or 20 amps. Add a 1,200-watt toaster or a 1,500-watt kettle on the same circuit and you are over the limit. The breaker trips because the circuit is loaded, not because the coffee maker is faulty. Spread heat-producing appliances across different outlets and circuits, and avoid running two of them at once.
