The short answer: to use an Instant Pot, add your food and at least one cup of thin liquid to the inner pot, lock the lid, turn the steam valve to Sealing, press a cooking button (or Pressure Cook), set the time, and walk away — the pot heats up, builds pressure, counts down your set time, then you release the steam either naturally or by turning the valve to Venting. Know the Instant Pot Parts Before You Start

Do the water test first

Before cooking anything you care about, run a water test. It confirms the machine works and teaches you the sequence with zero risk.

  1. Seat the sealing ring firmly in its rack under the lid — make sure it sits flat all the way around.
  2. Pour three cups of water into the inner pot and place the pot in the base.
  3. Lock the lid (turn until it clicks) and set the valve to Sealing.
  4. Press Pressure Cook and set 5 minutes on high. The display will read On while it heats.
  5. Watch the float valve pop up as pressure builds, then the timer counts down.
  6. When it finishes, do a quick release — carefully turn the valve to Venting and let the steam out until the float valve drops. Then open.

If it reached pressure and held it, your pot is working and you now know the whole cycle.

The Basic Instant Pot Cooking Sequence

Every pressure-cooked meal follows the same steps:

  1. Prep and add ingredients. If browning meat or sauteing aromatics, use the Saute function first, directly in the inner pot, with the lid off.
  2. Add the liquid minimum. At least one cup of thin liquid for a 6-quart pot. This is non-negotiable for pressure cooking.
  3. Deglaze. If you sauteed, scrape the browned bits off the bottom with your liquid — stuck food is the number one cause of the Burn error.
  4. Layer thick sauces on top, do not stir them in. Tomato sauce, cream and dairy scorch on the bottom; keep them above the thin liquid until after cooking.
  5. Lock the lid and set the valve to Sealing.

Natural release vs quick release

How you let the pressure out changes the result, and getting it wrong ruins food or makes a mess:

For quick release, keep your hand and face away from the valve — the steam is hot enough to burn. Use a long spoon to flip the valve if you are nervous. Never quick-release a full pot of foamy food like split-pea soup; it will spray through the valve.

Cleaning and Instant Pot Care

The inner pot, sealing ring, lid and trivet are dishwasher safe on most models. After each use, wash the ring (it holds smells), wipe the rim and the anti-block shield, and check the float valve moves freely. Never submerge the base unit, which houses the electronics.
