The short answer: most home lawns need two to four fertilizer applications a year, spaced six to eight weeks apart and applied only while the grass is actively growing. Cool-season lawns get one or two fall feeds plus an optional light spring feed. Warm-season lawns get two to four feeds spread across late spring and summer. The real limit is the annual nitrogen budget: roughly 2 to 4 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year for most grasses, and as little as 0.5 to 1 pound for centipede. Split that total across your applications rather than counting applications alone.

How many times a year should each grass type be fertilized?
Nitrogen appetite varies more between species than most bag instructions admit. Bermuda is a heavy feeder that will absorb five pounds a year and keep going; centipede is a low-fertility grass that declines when fed like Bermuda. Match the grass, not the neighbor.

Never apply more than 1 pound of quick-release nitrogen per 1,000 square feet in a single application. Higher single doses are the main cause of fertilizer burn and of nitrogen leaching past the root zone. How far apart should applications be?
Leave six to eight weeks between feeds, extending to eight to ten weeks for slow-release formulations. That spacing exists because a standard granular feed keeps the grass responding for about six weeks; applying again inside that window stacks nitrogen that the plant cannot take up, so it either burns the leaf or moves past the roots into groundwater. Liquid feeds behave differently: they act within days and fade within two to three weeks, so liquid programs run on shorter intervals at much lower rates per application.

How do you know if you are fertilizing too often?
The clearest signals are growth you cannot keep up with and disease. A lawn needing cutting twice a week in mild weather is being pushed too hard. Excess nitrogen thins cell walls and makes turf far more susceptible to brown patch, dollar spot and pythium, and it favors sucking insects. Watch for these:
- Thatch building past half an inch, checked by cutting a small wedge of turf and measuring the brown layer above the soil.
- Dark green streaks or stripes where spreader passes overlapped.
- Yellow-brown scorch within a few days of application, especially on a dry lawn.
- Grass that grows fast but wilts quickly in heat, a sign of shallow roots from constant top growth.

Do you need a soil test to decide?
A soil test is the only way to know whether you need phosphorus and potassium at all, and it typically costs $10 to $25 through a state land-grant university extension lab. Many established lawns already have adequate phosphorus, and several states, including Maryland, New Jersey, Minnesota and Wisconsin, restrict phosphorus in lawn fertilizer unless a test shows a deficiency or the lawn is newly seeded. Testing every three to four years lets you drop nutrients you do not need and put the money into the nitrogen timing that actually changes how the lawn looks.
