To get rid of moss in a lawn, kill the existing moss, rake it out, then fix the conditions that let it grow. An iron sulfate (ferrous sulfate) product or a soap-based moss killer blackens moss within days; once dead, rake or dethatch it out and reseed the bare patches. Apply on a dry day when rain is not expected for a day or so, and keep iron products off concrete and pavers, which they stain rust-brown. Treat when the moss is actively growing, typically spring or fall.

Step 2: rake it out

Once the moss has blackened, remove it. Raking live moss spreads regrowing fragments, so wait for the treatment to work first.

  1. Rake or dethatch firmly to lift out the dead moss, using a dethatching rake by hand or a powered dethatcher for large areas.
  2. Clear the debris completely, since leftover moss can regrow.
  3. Expect bare soil underneath — that is normal, and it is the space you must fill with grass before moss returns.

Nothing kills moss permanently on its own, because moss is a symptom, not a disease. A product such as iron sulfate (ferrous sulfate) or a soap-based moss killer blackens and kills the existing moss within days, and raking removes it. But moss returns unless you fix the underlying conditions that favor it — shade, poor drainage, compacted or acidic soil, and thin grass. Does baking soda or dish soap kill lawn moss?

A dish-soap solution can kill small patches of moss on contact and is a common home remedy, mixed at roughly two to four ounces of soap per gallon of water and sprayed on the moss. Baking soda can also dry moss out but risks affecting soil chemistry and is less reliable. Both handle small areas but do nothing for the larger problem. Should you rake moss out of the lawn?

Does lime get rid of moss in the lawn?

Only indirectly, and only if your soil is genuinely acidic. Moss tolerates low pH better than grass, so if a soil test shows acidic soil, applying lime to raise the pH helps grass compete over time. But lime does not kill moss, works slowly over months, and is useless — even harmful — if your soil pH is already fine. Test the soil before liming. Many mossy lawns have normal pH and are mossy because of shade or drainage, in which case lime does nothing.

Why does moss keep coming back in my lawn?
