How we rank · full disclosure.
The short version: mosquito traps work, but not nearly as well as they are sold. A trap has to out-compete you for a mosquito's attention, and you are broadcasting far more carbon dioxide and body odor than any consumer device. The DynaTrap DT1050 is our pick because it runs quietly and chemical-free all season and owners keep it going year after year; the Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus catches more because it generates real CO2, at the cost of propane and refills. The unglamorous truth is that a twelve-dollar pack of Bti dunks (paid link) in your standing water reduces mosquito numbers more than any of them.
Top Picks at a Glance

Our #1 Pick: DynaTrap DT1050
The DT1050 pulls ahead of the field on the things that decide whether a trap is still running in year three. It is silent — no zap, no snap, just a fan — which means people leave it on. It uses no pesticide and no propane, so the only running cost is electricity and an occasional bulb. And its retaining cage dries the catch rather than leaving a rotting sludge to clean, which is the complaint that kills most traps.
The honest limits deserve equal billing. Its CO2 output comes from a titanium-dioxide-coated surface reacting under UV, which is a trace quantity next to a propane trap or a human being. Owners consistently report large catches of gnats, moths, midges and beetles, with mosquitoes a smaller share — and some of those beetles and moths are beneficial. It works best sited 30 to 40 feet from the patio, running continuously, in a yard where the breeding water has already been dealt with. Judged as one layer in a program, it earns its place; judged as a standalone solution, it will disappoint.

The Ranked Field

Best for a half-acre yard, running continuously through the season
- UV light plus a titanium-dioxide surface that releases CO2
- Whisper-quiet fan draws insects into a retaining cage
- Covers up to 1/2 acre; no chemicals, no zapping noise
- Weather-resistant for continuous outdoor use
Why buy it: the trap that owners actually keep running year after year — quiet, chemical-free, and effective enough on mosquitoes and gnats to justify the price if you run it constantly.

Best for up to an acre, mounted on a pole away from the house
- Larger retaining cage and coverage up to 1 acre
- Same UV plus CO2-releasing surface as the DT1050
- Optional pole mount to site it away from seating
- Two-year bulb life per the manufacturer
Why buy it: the same technology scaled up, and the bigger cage matters more than the coverage claim — a full cage stops catching, and this one takes far longer to fill.

Best for a genuine CO2 lure over an acre, if you will maintain it
- Converts propane to CO2, the primary mosquito attractant
- Counterflow technology draws mosquitoes into a net
- Protects up to 1 acre; 50 ft power cord
- Uses replaceable attractant cartridges
Why buy it: the only consumer trap that produces real carbon dioxide rather than a trace, which is why it out-catches UV traps — and also why it costs a propane tank and an attractant refill every few weeks.
Best for gnats, fruit flies and the occasional indoor mosquito
- UV light, fan suction and a sticky glue board
- Silent, no zapping and no chemicals
- Sized for a bedroom, kitchen or office
- Glue boards are replaceable
Why buy it: genuinely excellent on fungus gnats and fruit flies indoors, and honest reviewers agree it is far weaker on mosquitoes — buy it for the gnats and treat any mosquito catch as a bonus.

Best for day-and-night indoor trapping with a bait pod
- 360-degree UV light plus a scent pod for daytime attraction
- Fan suction onto a replaceable sticky pad
- Runs day and night rather than UV-only at night
- Non-zapper, silent operation
Why buy it: the scent pod is the meaningful upgrade — UV alone does little in a lit room, so this is the version that keeps working during the day.

Best for killing the larvae instead of trapping the adults
- Bti bacterium, lethal to mosquito larvae only
- One dunk treats 100 sq ft of surface water for 30 days
- Labeled for birdbaths, ponds, rain barrels and troughs
- Harmless to fish, birds, pets and people
Why buy it: not a trap, and included anyway because for a tenth of the price it does more to reduce mosquito numbers than any trap in this list.

How the Trap Types Differ
| Type | Lure | Mosquito effectiveness | Running cost | Non-target catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Propane CO2 trap | Real CO2 plus attractant | Highest of the consumer options | High — propane and cartridges | Moderate |
| UV + trace CO2 fan trap | UV light, warmth, trace CO2 | Moderate | Low — electricity, bulbs | High |
| Indoor UV + glue trap | UV light, sometimes a scent pod | Low on mosquitoes; high on gnats | Low — glue boards | Low (indoors) |
| Bug zapper | UV light only | Effectively none | Low | Very high |
| Bti larvicide (not a trap) | None — kills larvae in water | Highest overall population effect | Very low | Essentially none |
The bottom two rows are the honest bookends of this category. Bug zappers are the worst thing you can buy for mosquitoes — they attract with a cue mosquitoes barely respond to and kill mostly beneficial insects, which we cover in do bug zappers work on mosquitoes. Bti dunks are the best thing you can buy, and they are not a trap at all.
Placement Is Most of the Result
Traps fail more often from siting than from design. Three rules cover it:
- Never next to the patio. A trap placed beside the seating area actively draws mosquitoes into it. Put it between the people and the source — the treeline, the damp shade, the pond — roughly 30 to 40 feet away.
- Shade, not sun. Bright sunlight overwhelms a UV lure and heats the housing. Mosquitoes rest in shade anyway.
- Continuously, all season. Trapping is cumulative across generations. Switching it on for a barbecue accomplishes nothing.
How We Rank
We never buy, install or run these traps. The ranking comes from aggregated owner ratings across the most-owned mosquito traps, weighted heavily toward reviews written after a full season rather than a first week, and cross-checked against published mosquito-control guidance so no product earns a place on catch-rate marketing alone. Four factors carry the weight: realistic mosquito effect, judged against the fact that traps compete with humans for attention; non-target catch, because a device that kills mostly beneficial insects is a cost not a benefit; running cost and maintenance, which is what actually determines whether a trap is still running in year two; and build durability outdoors. Prices were checked at the time of writing. Full method: how we rank.

The Traps, Reviewed
1. DynaTrap DT1050 — Best Overall
Covered above. Owners praise: silent operation, no chemicals, big catches of gnats and midges, and a cage that is easy to empty. Owners gripe about: a mosquito share of the catch smaller than expected, bulbs needing replacement, and the honest observation that beneficial insects end up in the cage too. Check price (paid link).
2. DynaTrap DT2000XLP — Best for Large Yards
The scaled-up sibling, rated to an acre with a substantially larger retaining cage. The cage size is the real upgrade: a full cage stops catching, and in a heavy-insect yard the smaller unit fills faster than most owners expect.
Owners praise: the larger capacity, the optional pole mount for siting it away from the house, and long bulb life. Owners gripe about: the price, the same modest mosquito share as its smaller sibling, and its size on a small property. Check price (paid link).
3. Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus — Best Propane CO2 Trap
The only mainstream consumer trap that generates real carbon dioxide by burning propane, which is why it catches mosquitoes rather than mostly moths. Counterflow technology vents the CO2 and draws returning insects into a net.
Owners praise: a genuinely large mosquito catch and a visible drop in biting over a season when run continuously. Owners gripe about: the cost of ownership — propane tanks and attractant cartridges add up fast — plus finicky startup and maintenance, which is exactly why its rating sits lower than the DynaTraps despite catching more. Check price (paid link).
4. Katchy Indoor Insect Trap — Best Indoor Trap
Excellent at what it is actually good at. Indoors, against fungus gnats and fruit flies, it is one of the most consistently praised products in home pest control. Against mosquitoes it is weak, and honest owners say so.
Owners praise: near-elimination of fruit flies and fungus gnats, silent operation, and a design that does not look like pest equipment. Owners gripe about: poor mosquito results, the ongoing cost of glue boards, and needing a dark room for the UV to compete. Check price (paid link).
5. Katchy Duo — Best Round-the-Clock Indoor
The upgrade that addresses the original's real weakness: UV does almost nothing in a lit room, so the Duo adds a scent pod that works in daylight, plus 360-degree light.
Owners praise: catching through the day as well as at night, and stronger results in bright kitchens. Owners gripe about: the recurring cost of pods on top of glue boards, and mosquito performance that is still secondary to gnats. Check price (paid link).
6. Mosquito Dunks — Best Actual Population Control
Included in a trap roundup on purpose. A Bti dunk in standing water kills the larvae for about 30 days, which removes mosquitoes before they can fly, bite or need trapping. Per dollar it is the most effective mosquito product sold.
Owners praise: a dramatic reduction in mosquitoes breeding in rain barrels, ponds and low spots, and complete safety around fish, birds and pets. Owners gripe about: a one to two week delay before results show, and no effect on adults flying in from elsewhere. Check price (paid link).
What Owners Actually Complain About
"It catches everything except mosquitoes." The most common review in this category, and it is largely accurate for UV-based traps. Moths, midges, beetles, gnats and flies dominate the cage. Some of those are beneficial insects, which is a genuine cost worth weighing.
Running cost on propane traps. Tanks and attractant cartridges turn a one-time purchase into a seasonal subscription, and owners who did not budget for it stop running the trap — at which point it catches nothing.
Expecting it to replace source reduction. A trap removes adults. It does nothing about the water producing new ones every eight to ten days. Owners who dump the water first and then run a trap report far better results than those who buy a trap instead.
Placement. Traps set on the deck rail pull mosquitoes toward the people. It is the easiest mistake to make and the easiest to fix.
The Verdict
If you want a trap, buy the DynaTrap DT1050, site it 30 to 40 feet from the patio in shade, and leave it running all season. If mosquito pressure is severe and you will maintain it, the Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus catches more because it makes real CO2. But do the cheap thing first: dunk the standing water, walk the yard weekly, and put a fan on the patio. Traps are a supplement to that plan, never a substitute for it.
