Sharpen a chainsaw chain by filing each cutter with a round file sized to the chain pitch, held at the factory top-plate angle (30 degrees on most consumer chains), taking three to five even strokes per cutter from the inside outward — then check the depth gauges with a flat gauge tool and file any that stand proud. Do all the cutters facing one way first, then turn the saw around and do the rest. Every cutter must end the same length, or the saw will cut in a curve. Budget 15 to 20 minutes by hand.
How do you know the chain is dull?
A sharp chain pulls itself into the wood under its own weight — you guide the saw, you do not push it. Once you find yourself leaning on the saw, it is already dull enough to be a safety issue, because force is what turns a stuck cut into a kickback event.

What you need
- A round file sized to your chain pitch — 5/32, 3/16 or 7/32 in. are the common sizes. The pitch is stamped on the drive links.
- A file guide or filing holder. This is not optional for a beginner. A guide holds the file at the correct height and angle and is the difference between a chain that cuts straight and one that does not.
- A flat file and a depth-gauge tool for the rakers.
- A stump vise or bench vise to hold the bar steady. Filing a chain on a saw that moves is a lost cause.
- Gloves and eye protection. Cutters are razor sharp and filings fly.

Sharpening the chain, step by step
- Make the saw safe. On a gas saw, stop the engine. On a battery saw, remove the battery. On a corded saw, unplug it. Then engage the chain brake so the chain cannot rotate while you file.
- Clamp the bar. A stump vise driven into a log, or the bar in a bench vise with soft jaws. The bar must not move.
- Clean the chain. Wipe sawdust and oil sludge off the cutters. You cannot see a witness mark through gum.
- Find the shortest cutter and mark it. Look for the one shortened by damage. Every other cutter has to be filed back to match it, and this is what stops the saw cutting crooked. Mark it with a marker so you know where you started.
- Fit the file into the cutter. The file sits in the gullet against the cutting edge with roughly one fifth of its diameter standing above the top plate. Too low and you hook the cutter; too high and you round the corner off.
- Set the angle from the factory marks. The top plate of each cutter carries a witness line from the factory grind. Align your file guide to that line — usually 30 degrees — and hold it level unless the chain specifies a down angle.
- File outward only, three to five strokes. Push from the inside of the cutter toward the outside, lift the file clear on the return. Filing on the pull stroke dulls the file and rounds the edge. Count the strokes.
- Do every cutter facing the same direction. Work around the chain in one direction, using the same stroke count, releasing the chain brake and advancing the chain by hand as you go. Re-engage the brake before each cutter.
- Turn the saw around and do the others. Swapping sides rather than trying to file left-handed is what keeps the two sets of cutters matched. Uneven left and right cutters is the classic cause of a curved cut.
- Check the depth gauges. Lay the depth-gauge tool across the chain. Any raker standing proud of the slot gets two or three strokes with the flat file until it is flush, then round the front edge back to its original profile. Typical clearance is 0.025 in. for most consumer chains — check your manual.
- Inspect and tension. Every cutter should show a bright, uniform cutting corner with no shiny flat on the tip. Retension the chain, then oil it before the first cut.
Why the depth gauges matter more than people think
The depth gauge — the small rounded fin ahead of each cutter, also called the raker — controls how deep the cutter can bite. Every time you file a cutter you make it slightly shorter and lower, which means the gauge in front of it is now relatively higher and the cutter takes a thinner bite. Sharpen five or six times without touching the gauges and you end up with a chain that is genuinely sharp and still cuts like it is blunt.
The error in the other direction is worse. Gauges filed too low let the cutter take a bite it cannot clear, and the chain grabs, bounces and dramatically increases kickback risk. Use the gauge tool rather than judging by eye, and take gauges down in small increments — roughly every third sharpening is a common rhythm.

The mistakes that ruin chains
- Wrong file size. Too large rounds the gullet and drops the cutting corner. Too small hooks the cutter, and hooked cutters grab and chatter.

- Changing the top-plate angle. Follow the factory witness marks. A steeper angle cuts faster and dulls almost immediately.
- Ignoring the depth gauges. The commonest reason a freshly filed chain still cuts slowly.
- Filing a blued chain. Heat-blued steel has lost its hardness and will not hold an edge. Replace it.
- Filing on the pull stroke. Wrecks the file and rolls the edge over.
- Sharpening a chain and ignoring the bar. Burred or unevenly worn bar rails make a perfect chain cut crooked. Dress the rails with a flat file and check the groove depth.
Safety while sharpening and cutting
Remove the battery, unplug the cord or stop the engine before touching the chain — chainsaws have started under a hand more than once. Engage the chain brake while filing so the chain cannot advance unexpectedly, and wear cut-resistant gloves: a sharpened cutter opens skin on the lightest contact.
Sharpening is a safety job, not just a performance one. A dull chain makes you force the saw, and force is what produces the sudden, uncontrolled events that hurt people. The dominant one is kickback: contact between the upper quadrant of the bar nose and any object drives the saw back and up toward your head and shoulder faster than you can react. Keep the nose out of the cut, wrap your thumb fully around the front handle, and keep the chain brake serviceable.
