Sharpen hedge trimmer blades by disconnecting the power, clamping the blade bar, and drawing a 6 to 8 inch flat mill file across each cutting tooth along its existing bevel — typically 30 to 45 degrees — using firm strokes in one direction only, three to six per tooth. Then remove the burr from the flat back face with a fine stone, wipe the blades clean, and apply a light resin-cutting lubricant. The whole job takes 30 to 45 minutes for a 22 inch blade, costs about $10 in files, and restores a clean shearing cut that leaves hedges healthier than a torn one.
When blades need sharpening

The step-by-step sharpen
- Kill the power. Properly. Unplug a corded trimmer. Remove the battery from a cordless. On a gas trimmer, pull the spark plug boot off and secure it away from the plug. This is not optional — a trimmer that starts while your fingers are between the blades is a life-changing injury.
- Clean the blades first. Scrub off sap, resin and dried plant material with a stiff brush and a resin remover or mineral spirits. Filing through hardened sap does nothing except clog the file, and it hides the bevel you need to see.
- Inspect before you commit. Look for bent teeth, cracks, chips deeper than about a sixteenth of an inch, and any blue or straw discoloration from overheating. Bent or cracked blades get replaced. Blue steel is soft and will not hold an edge.
- Clamp the blade bar securely in a padded vise or to a workbench, with the section you are filing accessible and the blade unable to shift.
- Find the bevel. Lay the file against the ground face of a tooth and rock it slightly until it sits flat against the whole face. That is your angle — usually 30 to 45 degrees. Take a photo of the file position so you can return to it consistently.
- File in one direction only. Push the file away from you, following the bevel, with firm even pressure. Lift the file on the return stroke. A file cuts on the push; dragging it back dulls the file and rounds the edge.
- Three to six strokes per tooth, then move on. Count them and keep the count identical on every tooth. Uneven filing produces a blade that cuts in patches. The goal is a small, consistent amount of metal off each tooth, not one perfect tooth.
- Work along the full length of one blade, then release, flip, and do the other blade. Both the moving and the fixed blade have cutting teeth and both need doing.
- Deburr the flat back face. Filing raises a wire burr on the reverse. Lay a fine stone flat against the back of the blade and make two or three light passes along its length. Flat means flat — do not lift the stone into an angle, because rounding this face destroys the shear between the two blades.
- Wipe the filings off. Steel dust left on the blades will accelerate corrosion.
- Check the blade gap. Most trimmers have adjustable bolts along the blade bar. Manufacturers typically specify a small clearance, often in the region of 0.2 to 0.5 mm depending on model, so the blades shear against each other without binding. Consult your manual. Too tight and the motor overheats; too loose and stems slide between the blades instead of being cut.
- Lubricate. Spray a light machine oil or a purpose-made blade lubricant along both blades and cycle them briefly once reassembled and powered.
- Reconnect and test on a few soft stems before going at a whole hedge.
Mistakes that ruin blades
- Overheating with a grinder. Blue or straw-colored steel has lost its temper and is permanently soft. If you use a powered tool, keep the blade cool enough to touch at all times.
- Changing the bevel angle. Guessing at 20 or 60 degrees instead of matching the factory grind gives you an edge that either chips or tears.
- Filing the flat back face. The single most damaging mistake. It is a reference surface, not a cutting surface.
- Filing on the pull stroke. Rounds the edge and wrecks the file.
- Uneven stroke counts. Produces a blade that cuts in some spots and drags in others.
- Skipping the deburr. The burr breaks off in use within minutes and you are back to a dull edge.
- Filing a coated or diamond-ground blade. Some manufacturers specify these are not user-serviceable. Read the manual before the first stroke.

Keeping the edge longer
Most dulling is avoidable. Clean sap off after every session, because dried resin holds moisture against the steel and causes pitting that destroys an edge. Lubricate the blades before and after use. Do not cut anything thicker than the trimmer is rated for — pushing a hedge trimmer through half-inch woody stems is what chips teeth, and that is what loppers are for. Avoid contact with the ground, with wire fencing and with plant ties, which are the three things that put real nicks in a blade. Store the trimmer with a blade sheath on, in a dry place. There is a point where sharpening stops being worthwhile. Broken teeth, a bent bar, worn blade bolts that will not hold a gap, or blades that have been ground back so far the teeth are stubby all mean replacement — either new blades if the model supports them, or a new trimmer. Safety, plainly
Disconnect all power before touching the blades: unplug, remove the battery, or pull and secure the spark plug boot. Wear cut-resistant gloves and eye protection for the whole job. Clamp the blade — hand-holding a blade bar while filing is how people cut tendons. Work in good light and do not rush the last few teeth, which is when concentration slips. Dispose of solvent-soaked rags safely and do not use flammable solvents near an ignition source.
