A garage pegboard is a two-hour beginner project with a huge payoff — no permit, nothing structural — for roughly 40 to 100 dollars in board, furring, and hooks (2026). You need a drill, a level, and a stud finder. The whole job comes down to one detail most people miss: pegboard must stand a half-inch to three-quarter-inch off the wall on furring strips so the hooks can seat behind it, and those strips must be screwed into studs. Mount the board flat to the wall and every hook falls out; skip the studs and the loaded panel sags off. Tools and materials

Step 1: Find the studs and plan the field
Locate and mark the studs across the wall area you want to cover. Plan furring at every stud (16 or 24 inches on center) plus horizontal strips at the top, middle, and bottom of the board. Decide the overall size — a 4-foot by 4-foot or 4-foot by 8-foot panel is common — so the board edges land on furring.
Step 2: Mount the furring strips
Cut 1x2 or 1x3 furring and screw it to the studs with 2-inch screws, keeping the strips flush and level with each other so the board mounts flat. This furring layer is what creates the essential gap behind the board. Check the assembled grid with a level and a straightedge before the pegboard goes on.

Step 3: Attach the pegboard
Hold the pegboard against the furring, level it, and screw through the board into every strip with 1-inch screws and washers, spacing fasteners every 12 to 16 inches across the whole field. Do not fasten only the edges — a hardboard panel bows in the middle and pops hooks loose without field screws. Keep the board flat as you drive each screw.
Step 4: Plan the hook layout
Before hanging tools, lay out where each group goes — trace outlines with a marker if you want a shadow board so tools return to the same spot. Group by task and keep heavy items low. Use locking metal hooks for anything you lift often so the hook does not come out with the tool. A planned layout is what keeps a pegboard tidy instead of chaotic.

Step 5: Hang and adjust
Insert the hooks and load your tools, distributing weight and watching that the board stays flat against the furring. If any area flexes, add a field screw there. Rearrange freely — the point of pegboard is that the layout is never permanent, so retune it as your tool kit grows.
