Why does winter air dry out skin in the first place?
Because relative humidity collapses when you heat cold air. Air at 30°F saturated with moisture holds a fixed, small amount of water. Bring that same air indoors and warm it to 70°F and its capacity roughly triples, so the relative humidity falls to somewhere near 15 percent without a single molecule of water being removed. Skin comfort improves through most of that range, and the marginal benefit above 50 percent is small while the downside is real. How cold does it have to be before I cannot run 45 percent?
